Gospel of John—Lesson 27

By Joyce Webb 2026

John Chp. 9 Vs. 1-12

Vs. 1, 2 Jesus and his disciples passed by a blind man. The man had been blind since his birth. The disciples said to Jesus, “Who sinned—this man or his parents?” (They thought that such an awful thing as blindness must be a punishment from God.)

Vs. 3 Jesus said, “Neither sinned. This happened so that the works of God could be shown.”

Vs. 4 Jesus said, “ I must do the works of God while it is still day, for night comes when no man can work.”

( Meaning—Jesus only had a short time to do miracles and show people who he was—because in a little while he would go back into heaven.)

V.s 5 Jesus said, “As long as I am in the world—I am the light of the world.”

Vs. 6 Then Jesus spit on the ground and mixed the spit with dirt, then took it and put it on the blind man’s eyes.

Vs. 7 Jesus told the blind man to go to the pool of Siloam and wash.

The blind man went to the pool and washed and then he could see.

(Imagine—for the first time in his life he saw things! What would that be like?)

(I also wonder why Jesus used the spit and dirt when so many other times he spoke a word and someone was healed, or he touched them—yet this time he used the dirt.)

Vs. 8 The people who lived near where the blind man lived said, “Isn’t this the man who we know and was born blind and sat and begged?”

Vs. 9 Some people said that it was a man who looked like him. Others said that it was the same man. Then the man said, “I am that man.”

Vs. 10 They said, “How is it that you can see now?”

Vs. 11 The man said, A man named Jesus made a dirt/clay mixture and put it on my eyes, then told me to go wash in the pool of Siloam.

So I did that, and then I could see.

Vs. 12 They said, Where is that man? He said, I don’t know.
