Gospel of John—Lesson 25

John Chp. 8 Vs. 31-47
Verse 31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believe on him—–if you continue in my word—–then you are my disciples indeed (true disciples).
Disciples—a person who follows a certain teaching, or teacher.
Verse 32 Then you shall (will) know the truth—–and the truth will make you free.
(Verse 32 is often memorized and quoted. This verse is talking about how God can help you understand the “truth” in the scriptures.
God can help you understand the truth about a lot of things—
He can help you so you understand when people may be trying to trick you or fool you. He can help you understand how to do things.
(The next verses seem to be talking, also, to those who do not believe.)
Verse 33 The people said to Jesus—- We are Abraham’s seed (of his family)
and were never in bondage to any man. Now you are saying we can be made free.
( The Jews once were in bondage—-they were slaves in Egypt—then God did miracles to bring them out.)
Verse 34 Jesus said, Whoever does sin—is a servant of sin.
Jesus is talking about spiritual things. If you serve sin— Satan is the head of sin—-or if you serve righteousness—- God is the head of righteousness. Either you are serving Satan and sin, or you are serving God and righteousness.)
Verse 35 The servant does not abide (live, stay) in the house forever; but the Son abides in the house forever.
(Jesus is talking about righteousness and heaven.)
Verse 36 If the Son makes you free—then you are free indeed (truly).
(This is another verse people memorize and quote.)
Verse 37 Jesus said, I know you are Abraham’s seed, but you seek (look) to kill me—because you will not believe my words.
Verse 38 I speak what I have seen with my Father. You do what you have seen with your father.
Verse 39 They said: Abraham is our father. Jesus said: If Abraham were your father then you would do the works of Abraham.
(Abraham listen to God and obeyed what God told him.)
Verse 40 But now you seek to kill me. I am a man who has told you the truth—-which I have heard from God—–this is what Abraham did.
Verse 41 You do the deeds (actions, works, things) of your father.
They said to Jesus—we were not born in fornication (sexual sin, –sex without marriage to that person).
We have one Father, he is God.
(They said this because they knew that Jesus’ mother, Mary, was pregnant with Jesus before she was married. They did not believe that it was the Holy Spirit that made a baby in Mary.)
Verse 42 Jesus said: If God were your Father—you would love me.
I proceeded forth (came out of God,— begotten —John 3:16) and I came from God (to earth).
I did not come because of my own decision, but because he sent me.
Verse 43 Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because your heart/mind will not receive it.
Verse 44 You are of your father the devil—-and the lust (sins) of your father you do.
From the beginning, he was a murderer—-because there is no truth in him.
When he speaks a lie—that is his character—that is who he is—-he is a liar and the father of it.
Verse 45 I tell you the truth, but you will not believe me.
Verse 46 Which of you can name a sin that I have done? So, if I tell you the truth, why don’t you believe me?
Verse 47 He that is of God—hears God’s words. You do not hear my words because you are not of God.
