Gospel of John –Lesson 19

John Chip. 7 Vs. 1-22

Vs. 1 Jesus walked in G_____________. He could not walk around in Jewry (Judea) because the Jewish church leaders wanted to ___________ him.

The feast of T____________________ was near.

Vs.3 Jesus’ brothers (they did not believe that Jesus was the Son of God)—-mocked him or taunted him to go to Judea. They said,
So that your disciples can see the _______________ that you do.

Vs. 4 They said that he (Jesus) could not to things in secret—-if he wanted to be known—-he would have to do things openly.
Show yourself to the world.

Vs. 5 Because his brothers did not believe in him.

(You would have thought that Mary would have told them about the angel coming to her and the things that happened at Jesus birth, and the wise men.
Maybe she did tell them, but they did not accept it.

They knew about the miracles he did because they are mocking him about it. Yet they still do not believe him. )

Vs. 6 Jesus said to them: My time has not yet come, but you can go any time you want.

Vs. 7 The world will not hate you—-but it will hate me. Because I am showing them that the things they do are evil.

Vs. 8 You go on up to the feast. I will not go up yet. My time is not yet come.

Vs. 9 After Jesus said this, —he stayed yet awhile in Galilee.

Vs. 10 After his brothers went to Jerusalem to the feast, Jesus also went to Jerusalem. But he went secretly—not openly.

Vs. 11 The Jewish church leaders looked for Jesus at the feast.
They asked, Where is he?

Vs. 12 The people in the crowds had different opinions about Jesus. Some said, He is a good man. Others said, He deceives people,

Vs. 13 Yet none of them spoke loudly about it—because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders.

Vs. 14 About half way through the feast time—-Jesus went up to the temple —he began teaching.

Vs.15 The Jewish people were surprised and impressed with what he was saying. They said: How can this man know all this? He never studied and learned from the Jewish teachers.

Vs. 16 Jesus said to them: My doctrine (teachings) are not my own thoughts. They are the teachings of the One who sent me. (Meaning God the Father)

Vs. 17 If any man will do His will—he will know of this teaching whether it is of God or not—-or whether I am just speaking my own thoughts.

Vs. 18 A person who speaks of himself seeks glory for himself.
But if he seeks glory for the one who sent him—then he is true, and there is no evil in him.

Vs. 19 Did Moses give you the law? Yet none of you have been able to keep it (perfectly—they failed in some way).

Why do you go about trying to kill me?

Vs. 20 The people answered: You have a devil. Who goes about trying to kill you?

Vs. 21 Jesus said: I have done one work–(Jesus healed a man on the Sabbath, and they were angry about him “working’ on the Sabbath).

Vs. 22 Moses gave you the law of circumcision—-which is a law older than Moses and goes back to Abraham—-and if the 8th day after birth falls on the Sabbath you circumcise the baby—-so you “work” on the Sabbath, too. But you are angry with me when a heal a man on the Sabbath.

(Circumcision was the cutting of the foreskin of a baby boy’s penis. It was a sign that the boy was of Abraham’s family and a follower of the true God of heaven.

This cutting of the skin was done on the 8th day. Though the people of that time did not know why God told them to do it on the 8th day.

Now, in modern times we know why—-the 8th day– the body makes more Vitamin K —-than any time before then—or after—so that it reduces bleeding—making it safer to cut the skin without so much bleeding. (These were Bible times before modern medicine to stop bleeding.)

When God tells us to do something—-He does not always explain all the reasons why. But He has good reasons.

People of that day did not know anything about Vitamins in the blood or how they worked in the body. Telling them why the 8th day was best—-they would not have understood anyway.

Sometimes, we would not understand God’s reasons —even if he told us—-so we just need to obey and do what He says.
