Gospel of John –Lesson 13

By Joyce Webb 2025

John Chp. 4     Vs. 42-54

Jesus is in Samaria. He is talking to a woman who has come to the city well to get water.

The disciples had gone into the city to buy some food.
They came back to the well to Jesus.

Jesus was not interested in eating. He said he had “meat to eat that you do not know about”.

Jesus was talking about ministering to the woman. The disciples did not know that he had talked with the woman—-because she had already left.

Jesus meant that in ministering to the woman—-it filled him with pleasure and a good feeling that he was doing God’s will—-and he no longer felt hungry.

Then he talked to the disciples about “reaping the harvest”—-meaning talking to people about Jesus and showing them that Jesus was God’s son—-so they would believe in Jesus.

The woman had gone back into the city—-and talked to many people. They came to hear Jesus and they believed in him.

Vs. 42 The people said to the woman —Now we believe Jesus—not because of the things you said—but because we have heard him for ourselves. We believe he is the Christ—The Messiah—-(Promised One) and the Saviour of the world.

Vs. 43 Jesus stayed there for 2 days. Then he went into Galilee.

Galilee was the area that Jesus was from. He lived in the town of Nazareth in the Galilee area.

Before when Jesus had gone there —-the people of Galilee —did not see him as special or a teacher or someone who did miracles.

Jesus had said–a prophet does not have honor in his own land.

They did not believe that Jesus was anything more than the local boy grown up. So because of their unbelief—Jesus could do not miracles there in Galilee.

This time—in Galilee—many of the people there— had been to Jerusalem for some of the holy days—-and saw Jesus there—and had seen the miracles that Jesus did there.

Vs. 46 Jesus came into the town of Cana. Do you remember what happened in Cana? See John Chp. 2

In Cana, there was a man there from the town of Capernaum. He was a nobleman and his son was sick—-near death.

Vs. 47 When the nobleman heard that Jesus was nearby—-he went to Jesus. He asked Jesus if he would come and heal his son.

Vs. 48 Jesus said—Except you see signs and wonders (miracles)—you will not believe.

Vs. 49 The nobleman said, Sir, come down or my son will die.

Vs. 50 Jesus said to him—Go on your way—your son will live.
The man believed Jesus—and went home.
Vs.51 As the nobleman was going toward home—-his servants met him—and said—Your son lives.

Vs. 52 The nobleman asked them—What time did my son begin to get well? They told him—yesterday—at 1:00 in the afternoon—the fever left—and he began to get well.

Vs. 53 So the nobleman knew that it was the same hour that Jesus had said to him—”Your son lives.” and he believed Jesus.
Now, his whole household believed in Jesus.

Vs. 54 This is the second miracle Jesus did in Galilee.
