II Timothy
By Joyce Webb 2024
Chapter 4 Verse 1-22
Verse 1 Paul tells Timothy—I “charge” you—-I give you this responsibility—before God—-and before the Lord Jesus Christ—-who will judge both the “quick” (alive, living) and the dead—-at his appearing and his kingdom;
Verse 2 Preach the word.
Be instant (be ready) —in season and out of season—-meaning be ready at any time.
Instruct others, correct them, and teach them —-do this with patience, and long-suffering if it is needed. Teach them doctrine—— the teachings of the Bible.
Verse 3 The time will come—–when men will not want to hear true doctrine.
Because of their own lust and desires, they will bring in teachers who say pleasant things that please their ears.
Verse 4 They will turn away from the truth. They would rather hear made up stories.
Verse 5 Be careful to watch things around you.
Be strong and be willing to suffer hard things.
Do the work of an evangelist—one who preaches and travels to preach.
Be faithful to your ministry and do it as long as God gives you strength.
Verse 6 Paul said—My time to leave this world has come.
I am ready to be offered as a sacrifice as to the Lord.
(Paul was in prison and he knew they were near to deciding to put him to death.)
Verse 7 Paul tells Timothy—I have fought a good fight.
I have finished my course. I have kept the faith.
(Paul said his ministry has been like a battle. But he has fought like a good soldier. His ministry has been like a race—-but he has finished the race. Through it all , he has kept the faith and remained faithful to the ministry and to God.)
Verse 8 Because of this—-(in Heaven) there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness—–which the Lord shall give to me—-
on that day.
I am not the only one who will receive a crown—-but all who also love his appearing. (Those who believe and are looking for Jesus’ coming again.)
Verse 9 Try to come see me soon.
Verse 10 Demas has forsaken me. He has loved this present world more and has gone to Thessalonica.
Paul speaks of two other men who have gone to other cities.
Verse 11 Only Luke is with me.
Take Mark and bring him with you. He will be helpful to me in my ministry.
Verse 12 I have sent Tychicus to Ephesus.
Verse 13 The cloak (coat) I left at Troas with Carpus.
Bring it with you when you come. Bring the books and especially the papers.
Verse 14 Alexander, the coppersmith, did much to hurt me.
May the Lord do to him –according to how he has treated others.
Verse 15 You be careful of him also. He has been against anything we preach.
Verse 16 The first time I had to stand before the judge to answer, no one was with me. All men had left me. I pray that God will not punish them for doing it.
Verse 17 Yet—the Lord stood with me. He gave me strength.
He used me to preach and that all Gentiles would hear the gospel.
I was delivered —-saved—”out of the mouth of the lion”—meaning from the one who would destroy—-cause death.
Verse 18 The Lord will save me from every evil work.
He will keep me and bring me to the heavenly kingdom.
To Him be glory forever. Amen.
Verse 19 -22 Paul wants Timothy to greet other people that
Paul has known and worked with.
The Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Grace be with you. Amen.
