Chapter 22 Verses 24-38
Verse 24 The disciples began to argue with each other —-about who would be thought to be the greatest one of them.
(The disciples were still thinking of Jesus as a King who would take control and rule over the Jewish people. He would win over the Romans—they would be out—and Jesus would be their ruler.
The disciples thought that they would be part of the ruling leaders. They were wondering which one of them would get the highest position to rule with Jesus.)
Verse 25 Jesus said to them: The kings of the Gentiles ruled over people. They tell them what can do —what they can not do.
Those leaders think that they are doing the people good and are being “friends” of the people.
Verse 26 Jesus told the disciples, you are not to be like that.
Whoever is the “greatest” among you —should be willing to be the lowest servant among you.
Whoever is “chief” among you —should be willing to be as a servant.
(These verses give us the “thought and idea” that we hear from government people when they say they have been voted in to “serve” the people.
Pastors say they are there to “serve” the people in their church.
This “idea” comes from what Jesus was telling the disciples.)
(When the disciples gathered for the Passover meal, Jesus took a bowl of water and towel and he washed the disciples feet.
In that day and land, people wore sandals. It was a hot and dusty land. When people went to someone’s house to visit or for a meal,—- especially if it was a rich person’s house—before they walked around in the house —with dusty feet and sandals—-a servant would wash their feet.
When the disciples met for the Passover Meal, they did not have a servant there, so Jesus (who was the leader) decided to be the one who would wash their feet.
Peter thought that Jesus should not be doing such a low job.
At first, he did not want Jesus to be the one to wash his feet.
Jesus was trying to show them, that being a leader of people—meant that they had to be humble.
So many of the leaders that they knew—were like a “boss” —telling others what to do.
Jesus was trying to tell them—that was not what he wanted them to be doing.
Jesus knew that his time here on earth was almost done.
Jesus knew he would be going back into heaven. He was trying to show the disciples how they were to do things—as leaders—of the believers in the future. They would be the leaders—but they were not to be “bosses“—they were to be humble—and show by example how to be a Christian and a follower of Jesus.)
Verse 27 Jesus asked them– who is greater? The person who sits beside you at the meal? Or the person who serves you?
Jesus said, I am here as one who serves you. (Jesus was their leader, and usually, others would serve him. But Jesus said, he was there serving them.)
Verse 28 You have all stayed true to me during all this time.
Verse 29, 30 My Father (in heaven) has given me a Kingdom. I now give you the right to sit with me in my kingdom, and to eat and drink with me at my table in that kingdom.
You will sit on 12 thrones judging the 12 tribes of Israel.
Verse 31 Jesus said to Simon Peter—Satan would like to tempt you and make you fail.
Verse 32 But I have prayed for you—that you will not fail.
When you have repented and turned to Me again, you will encourage your brother believers. (Jesus knew that Peter would deny him. And he knew that Peter would be so sorry for it. )
Verse 33 Peter—so sure of himself—said—I am ready to go with you, Jesus. I will go to prison, even die for you.
Verse 34 Jesus said to Peter—Before the rooster crows (makes his sound in the morning) you will have said you do not know me—3 times you will have said this.
Verse 35 Jesus said to them—when I sent you out to preach that time—I told you to go without a purse of money. I said not to take a written copy of what you would say. I said not to take extra shoes.
Jesus asked them: Did you want anything? Did you need anything?
They all answered, No. We did not need anything.
Verse 36 Jesus said, I am going to send you out again. This time I want you to take money, and written words, and buy a sword.
Verse 37 I am telling you—that the prophecy —things that were told that would happen to Me (the Messiah) —the time has come for them to happen.
The prophecy said—that He would be counted among the rebels.
(One who rebels or goes against the laws. Jesus would be counted as a “rebel” because he went against what the Jewish church leaders thought he should do. And because Jesus said he was God’s Son.)
Verse 38 The disciples said, Lord, we have 2 swords. Jesus said, That is enough.
