Chapter 20 Verses 39-47

Verse 39 The Jewish leaders have been trying to trick Jesus into saying something —-that they can use against him.

Jesus has just given a wise answer to their question. In this verse one of the leaders admits that Jesus has given a wise answer.

Verse 40 After that—the leaders did not ask him any more questions—-because they could see—-he was very wise—and he was not going to be tricked.

Verse 41 Now Jesus asks them a question.

Jesus asked: How can you say that Christ (the Messiah, Promised One who is to come)——- is the son of David?

Verse 42 David said in the book of Psalms—The LORD said unto my Lord, sit on my right hand—until I make your enemies your footstool.” Psalms 110:1

(The first LORD is written in all capital letters. This means it refers to God the Father. The second Lord has only the L as a capital letter. This means it refers to a “master” over someone.

The LORD (God the Father) said unto my Lord (David’s master-lord)—–that he was to sit on the Father’s right hand—-until the time came when the Father would put all of David’s Lord’s enemies under his feet.

David’s Lord was the Messiah-Jesus. David worshipped God.

God is 3 “persons” in one. Trinity meaning 3. David was worshipping God who was–God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

Yet at the time David wrote this, Jesus had not yet come as a human baby.

Some day God’s Son–Jesus would come as a baby—and he would come to a woman who was part of David’s tribe or family relatives.

So, in a way, Jesus was David’s son—great, great, great–many great grandson.

Verse 44 The question Jesus asked—How can this Lord of David’s —-also be his son?

David wrote this by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

The Jewish leaders could not answer it. The Jewish leaders never believed that Jesus was God’s son. They did not believe that Jesus was God or Divine. They did not believe that he was Lord.

So they did not believe that David’s Lord was Jesus—-part of the Trinity.

Jesus is confirming (proving) that this Old Testament verse—was written by David —and that what he wrote—was true.

Luke 22:69 Jesus himself said– That he would sit on the right hand of God.

Acts 7:55, 56 When Stephen was dying —from stones thrown at him—he said that he saw Jesus standing at the right hand of God.

Stephen was killed after Jesus had gone back into heaven.)

Today, if you go online and ask for an explanation of Psalms 110:1 from a Jewish website—you will find that they will say that such a conversation between Jews and Jesus would never have happened.

That such a “discussion” is so unreasonable (silly, not true) that it would never have happened.

The Jewish people still do not accept the New Testament or that Jesus was God.

The Trinity is a hard thing to understand. How can God be one—and yet be three?

Jewish people do not believe in the Trinity.

One explanation of the Trinity could be like this:

Water—is H20—–Two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom.

Water can be a liquid—it is still H20

Water can be a solid—it is still H20

Water can be a gas–vapor–steam—-it is still H20

The “shape” and appearance of it changes. It’s essence has not changed—it is still H20.

God manifests (shows) himself in 3 ways. Each way has its own purpose and way of working. It is still God. God is a spirit.

When we think of God the Father—-we think of an older person—-sitting on a throne—-who is over everything.

God is not a “person”—he is a spirit.

He manifested himself— in a person— in the body of Jesus.

He manifests himself through the Holy Spirit.

Verses 45-47 Then Jesus said to the people, Be careful—Be warned—the scribes (Jewish leaders who copied the scriptures and laws)—-they walk wearing long robes—they love to have people give them respect as the say “Hello”—-they love to have the highest, best seats in the Jewish church,—– and at feasts, and dinners.

But—they do not do the right thing—-they cheat widows and do not help them in the right way.

They stand where people can see them and make long prayers—so people will think they are so holy.

But they will receive the greater damnation—judgment by God.

(Because—they are full of pride—and think they are righteous in themselves—and do not have the right attitude toward God.)
