They are responsible for bringing Jesus to Pilate.
Now they seem to have forgotten what they said to Pilate.

It is true that the Romans are the ones who put Jesus on the cross.
The Jewish people were not allowed to put people to death. The Jewish people were ruled by Rome.
But it was the Jewish leaders who got Jesus and took him to the Roman governor, Pilate, for the Romans to kill Jesus.
Pilate did not want to kill Jesus. He did not see that Jesus did anything worthy of death.
To please the Jewish leaders, Pilate gave in and allowed Jesus to be killed.
