Think about this: The Jewish leaders did not want to “defile” (dirty) themselves so that they could not take the Passover meal.
But—they did not think they would “dirty” themselves by asking for the death of a man who was not guilty for any wrong doing.
3954. Vs. 29-31 What does Pilate ask them? ________________

They say that they would not have brought Jesus to Pilate unless he had done something very wrong. But they did not say what this wrong thing was.
Pilate guessed that they were angry because Jesus did something they did not like—-but it was not something against Roman law, it was something against their Jewish teachings.
So he told them to take Jesus and judge him themselves. The Jewish leaders said, No, because they were not allowed to do what? ____________________________________________

Think: Imagine what Pilate would think about such an answer. To a Roman —to say I am a king, but my kingdom is not of this world—–what was the man talking about? This must have seemed very strange.
3957. Jesus said that he was a king, and this is the reason he came into the world. And that he was to be a witness to the truth. That everyone who is of the truth hears what he says.
