Chapter 7     Vs. 1-18

Vs. 1 When Jesus finished talking to all the people, he went to the town of Capernaum.

Vs. 2 A Roman soldier, a centurion,—-he was a leader over many soldiers—–wanted to ask Jesus to heal his servant.

This servant was very important to him and he loved him.

The servant was very sick and almost to die.

When the soldier heard about Jesus, he asked some of the Jewish leaders to go to Jesus and ask him to come heal his servant.

Vs. 4, 5 The Jewish leaders told Jesus, —-this Roman soldier is a leader in the army. He is a good man. He has helped us Jews. He has built a church building for us. So please help him.

Vs. 6 Jesus went with them to the soldier’s house. As they were getting near, another servant from the soldier’s home came to Jesus.

He said, “My master says that he is not worthy for you to come into his house. He asks that you just say the word—-and the servant will be healed.

My master says—that he understands this because he is a person of authority, and if he tells his men to do something—they do it.”

Vs. 9 When Jesus heard him say this, Jesus said: I have not seen anyone in Israel have such faith as this.

Vs. 10 When the servant returned back to the house, the servant that had been sick was now well.

Vs. 11 The next day, Jesus went to the city of Nain. His disciples were with him, and many other people followed along.

Vs. 12 As they came into the city, there was a funeral going on. Men were carrying a dead man to bury him.

His mother, a widow, was walking along with them. And many people with her.

This was her only son.

This meant that she was alone now. In those days, woman did not go out to work, so a woman with no husband or son to help her and provide for her—-would be very poor and have trouble getting food or anything she needed.

Not only was she losing her son, but she would have a hard time living now.

Vs. 13 When Jesus saw her crying, he felt sorry for her, He told her, Do not weep (cry).

Vs. 14 Then Jesus went over to the bier—a flat board that the dead man was lying on—–he touched the board. The men carrying it, stood still.

Jesus said “Young man, I say to you, Get up (Arise).”

Vs. 15 The young man sat up, and began to talk. Then he went to his mother.

Vs. 16 Fear came over the people. They could feel God’s power in this thing.

They began to give glory to God.

They said, “A great prophet is among us. God has visited us this day.”

Vs. 17 The news about this went all over Judea, even John the Baptist heard what happened.
