Chapter 6      Vs. 27-49

Chapter 6 Vs. 27. Jesus gave them a “new” commandment.

In the old law of Moses, it was an “eye for an eye”. If someone hurt you, you were allowed to hurt them in the same measure.

Now, Jesus says: Love your enemy. Do good to those who do hate you.

Bless those people who curse you.

Pray for those people who treat you badly.

Vs. 29 If a person hits you on the cheek, let him hit you on the other cheek, too.

If a person takes away your cloak (cape), let him take your coat, too.

Vs. 30 Give to every man if he asks you for something.

If someone steals from you, do not try to get it back.

Vs. 31 Do to other people the way you want them to do to you.

Vs. 32, 33 If you are good to only those who are good to you—–or if you love only those who love you—what thanks do you have? Even sinners love those who love them.

Vs. 34 If you lend things to people you hope will give you something back—-what thanks have you? Sinners do the same, so they will receive something from those they did lend to.

Vs. 35 Love your enemies. Do good. When you lend, do not hope for anything in return. Then your reward (in heaven ) will be great.

 

You are the children of the Highest (God). He is kind to those who are not thankful. He is kind to the evil ones.

Vs. 36 Give mercy to others, just as your Father in heaven gives mercy.

Vs. 37. Do not judge others. Then you will not be judged.

Do condemn others, then you will not be condemned.

Forgive others, then you will be forgiven.

Vs. 38 Give to others, then it will be given to you (when you have a need).

(If you are known to be a generous person who shares and gives—-others will share and give to you.

Vs. 39 Then Jesus told them a “Parable”—-a story with a heavenly spiritual meaning.

Jesus said, Can a blind person lead others? They will both fall into a ditch.

Vs. 40 The disciple is not above or greater than his teacher or master.

Everyone who is perfect is like his master.

Vs. 41 Why do you see the “mote”, or fault or failing—– in your brother?

But you do not see the fault in yourself —-that is worse than his fault.

Vs. 42 How can you say to your brother—-let me help you with your fault, failing——when you have a worse fault than he?

You are a hypocrite. (One who pretends to be good and holy—-but really is not.)

First, fix your own fault and failing, then you can help someone else with theirs.

Vs. 43 A good tree gives good fruit, but a bad tree gives bad fruit.

Vs. 44 Every tree is known by its fruit.

Men do not get figs from a thorn tree.

They do not get grapes from a bramble bush.

Vs. 45 A good man—-out of the goodness of his heart—-brings forth good actions and deeds.

An evil man—-out of the evil in his heart—–brings forth evil actions and deeds.

Out of the thoughts of the heart—-a person speaks (good or evil)

If you see a person doing evil things, then you know what is in their heart.

If you see person doing good and holy things, then you know what is in their heart.

Vs. 46 Why do you call me “Lord”, and yet you do not do what a say?

(If a person is Lord over you, you are under his authority and do what he says.

If you do as you want—-no one is “Lord “ over you.

Our human nature would like for us to do what we want and have no Lord over us.

But when we come to Jesus to be forgiven of our sins, we promise Jesus that we will follow what he teaches and obey Him.

He becomes the “Lord” over our life.)

 

Vs. 47, 48 Jesus said: A person who comes to me—and hears my words—-and does them—–is like a person who builds a strong house.

He digs deep to make a firm foundation. He builds on a rock.

When a flood comes, the house stands firm. Because it is built on a rock.

Vs. 49 The person who hears my words—-but does not do them—-is like a person who builds his house on sand.

When the rain comes and the flood, —-the house falls —–because it has a weak foundation. The fall of that house is great.

(People who build their life on the teachings of Jesus—-are like a strong house built on a rock.

The storm and flood —–are like the bad things that happen in a person’s life.

If the person is built on Jesus and trusting in him, then the bad things of life will not tear them down. They will be able to stand firm and keep on going. They will not lose faith.
