Introduction:

This book of John was written by John, one of Jesus’ disciples.

He also wrote the Gospel of John. Here he writes 3 more letters called I John, II John, and III John.

We call them “books” of the Bible. They are really letters that were written to new believers in Jesus.

When a group of new believers got together to make up a “church” of believers, some of the disciples wrote letters to them—– to give them more teaching and to encourage them in the faith.

This letter from John was probably written from a place near Turkey called Ephesus.

t was written about 85 – 96 AD. That would be about 52 years or more after Jesus went back into heaven.

Jesus was here on earth for about 33 years. The letters “AD” mean after Christ.

Chapter 1

Verse 1

John begins the letter saying:

The One, the person, Jesus, was from the beginning of all things.

We have heard him and seen him with our own eyes.

We have touched him with our hands.

He is and was the Word of Life.

This one who is Life from God, was shown to us.

We are witnesses. We show these things to you. He is eternal life.

He was with the Father in heaven and he came down and showed himself to us.

Verse 3

The things we have seen and heard—-we have told to you—-so you can have fellowship with us.

Our fellowship is the God the Father and his son, Jesus Christ.

Verse 4

We write these things to you so your joy can be full.

Verse 5

This is the message we have heard from Jesus Christ, and we tell it to you.

God is light. In Him is no darkness at all.

Verse 6

If we say that we have fellowship with him, but we keep doing the dark things of sin,—-we are not telling the truth.

(We can not walk in darkness of sin and still have fellowship with God.)

Verse 7

He (Christ) is light, and if we walk in the light—-then we will have fellowship with him and with others who are walking in the light.

The blood of Jesus Christ cleans us from all sin.

Verse 8

If we say we do not have sin, —- we are deceiving our self. We are not telling the truth. (We all have sinned.)

Verse 9

If we confess our sin, he is faithful and just, —–he will forgive us of our sin. He will make us clean from all sin (unrighteousness).

Verse 10

If we say we have not sinned, then we are calling God a liar, because God has said all men have sinned.

If we say this, then we show that we do not believe what God says In His word.
