Because of this, no one else would be able to have her. She was the king’s woman, now. So when she left the king’s room, she was taken to the part of the palace where the king’s wives lived. She and the other young women were not “wives”, but they were the king’s women for his pleasure. The King James Bible calls them “concubines”.

They would be taken care of in the king’s palace. If the king asked for them again—-they would see the king—–if he did not ask for them—they would live until they died in the king’s house.

Only one of these women would be chosen to be queen.

You can imagine—–when these young women were told they would be taken to the king——-they may not have been happy about it. True—they would live in riches in the king’s house, but they may have rather stayed at home been poor and had a husband and family like other women.

Esther took the advice from Hegai. He knew what the king would like. She was wise.

We are wise, too, when we take the advice of others who know more than we do.
