His main saying is: “ ____________________________________________________
________________________________________________________” Vs. 1, 2
986. Vs. 4 What kind of clothes did John wear? __________________________
987 Vs.4 What did he eat? ____________________________________________
John lives simple. He does not have a house and lots of things. He is not interested in money and what money can buy. He has one propose in life. And that is to get people ready for Jesus.
988. Vs. 5, 6 Do many people come hear John? _________ How do we know?
____________________________________________________________________
There must have been some special “power of the Spirit” with John. Here is a man who is like an outdoor woodsman. But people come from far away to hear him. They believe what he says, and he baptizes them in water. Luke Chp. 1 tells about John’sbirth. Luke 1:15 says that the Holy Spirit came into John from the time of his birth. That is why he was such a powerful preacher.
989. When the Jewish church leaders Pharisees, and Sadducees came to hear John—-what did he call them? __________________________________________
Vs. 9 John is warning them not to be so proud about the fact that they are the “sons of Abraham” . The Jews felt they were special people because had chosen their group of people to be the ones to bring the Messiah, Savior into the world.
God did choose the Jewish people because of Abraham and God’s promise to Abraham. God promised Abraham that if Abraham followed God God would bless the whole world through his people.
This did not mean that the Jews were better than any other people. But the Jewish people developed that idea about themselves through the years. They looked down on other people of other nations. They sometimes called them “Gentile dogs.”
John is telling them that they should not be thinking of themselves as so special. If God wanted to he could make those stones on the ground to become people to be his children.
John warned the Jewish leaders to show that they were sorry for their sin and repent and do what was right.
This was shocking to them because the Jewish leaders felt that they were perfect.
They were THE JEWISH CHURCH LEADERS so they must be perfect.
They made hundreds of rules for the people to follow so they could be holy. But the Jewish leaders themselves were selfish, proud, mean, hateful, and only loved themselves.
Vs. 10 John warns them they are like a tree that is about to be cut down. A tree that does not grow fruit should be cut down. The Jewish leaders do not grow good fruit.
990. Vs. 11 John says he will baptize them in ____________________ but the One who comes after him (Jesus) will baptize with _________________________and ________________.
991. John says that Jesus will clean the floor of the wheat, he will keep the good wheat, and the chaff (hulls) he will ___________________________________. John meant that the people who had their heart right with God the good wheat will be kept, but the hulls (chaff) the people whose hearts are not right with God will be burned up.
992. Vs. 14 What does John say at first when Jesus wanted to be baptized?
______________________________________________________________________
993. Vs. 15 Jesus comes to John to be baptized. (Jesus does not need to repent and be baptized. He wants to be baptized as an example to others.) Jesus said: “Let me be baptized so I can fill the works of ___________________________.”
994. Vs. 16 17 What happened when Jesus came up out of the water?
_______________________opened

(These words are the words an Old Testament priest would say when he anointed his son to be the next priest. So God is saying: This is my son I am well pleased. He is going to be a priest.)
