(Jesus was really telling about himself. God had sent prophet/preachers to the people of Israel the Jews in the Old Testament. The people would not listen to them and they killed some of them.
In Jesus’ time, God sent John the Baptist to preach to them and they still would not listen. John the Baptist was killed by the Roman ruler.
God sent his son Jesus to preach to him and they still would not listen to God’s son. They were planning to catch him and kill him.)
Jesus told them a scripture verse from the Old Testament. It talks about the stone for a building. One stone the builders put off to the side because they did not think it was good enough for their building. Later that stone became the “cornerstone” of the building.
A “cornerstone” is the stone put in the corner of a building that is used to carve in the name of the building and maybe the year the building was made.
The stone the builders thought was not good enough became the special stone to hold the name of the building.
Jesus was the “stone” those Jewish church leaders threw away They thought he was not good enough to be part of their group or “building”.
Verse 43 Jesus said that the Kingdom of God will be taken away from you church leaders and it will be given to a group of people who will believe it and will grow “fruit” or will teach it to other people.
This happened because Jesus’ disciple Peter was sent to the Gentile people. The Gentiles believed the things about Jesus. They became the group of people who gave the gospel about Jesus to the world. Because most of the Jewish people never believed Jesus was God’s son.
Verse 44 Then Jesus said anyone who stumbles or falls over this “stone” –this special “cornerstone” Jesus that person will be broken to pieces. And that “stone” Jesus will break them and crush them in the end.
Jesus is the most important “stone”. Those Jewish church leaders would not accept Jesus as God’s son. They did not want to hear what he said. They were jealous of Jesus power to do miracles and jealous of how the people listened and followed Jesus.
They thought if they killed Jesus and got rid of him the people would forget about him and the people would listen to them and give them the respect and honor they wanted.
Jesus is telling them that getting rid of him will not help them. Jesus the “stone” will break them, they will be broken because of Jesus.
Jesus will be the judge of people someday. Those Jewish church leaders will stand before Jesus someday in heaven and Jesus will judge them. Since they did not accept and believe in Jesus they will not stay in heaven but will go to hell.
Vs. 45, 46 After they left Jesus they began to think about what Jesus said. They began to understand that the “farmer” in the story was them. Jesus knew they were trying to kill him.
2219. The Jewish church leaders did not try arrest Jesus and take him at that time. Why? __________________________________________________________________
