Gospel of John—Lesson 28

John Chp. 9 Vs. 12-41

Vs. 12 Jesus had just healed a blind man who had been blind all his life. He begged for money. Many people knew of him because they had seen him for years as he begged.

After he was healed and could see, some people said that this could not be the blind man they knew—it must be someone who looked like him.

But other people said, It is him and he can see now.

Some of the people took the man to see the Jewish leaders the Pharisees.

Vs. 14 It was the Sabbath day that Jesus made the “clay” from the dirt and put it on the blind man’s eyes. (The Jewish laws said that the people should not “work” on the Sabbath day.)

Vs. 15 The Jewish leaders asked the man how it was that he could see now. He told how Jesus made the “clay” and put it on his eyes and then he washed in the pool of Siloam and then he could see.

Vs. 16 Some of the Pharisees said—This man (Jesus) is not of God—because he did not keep the law of the Sabbath –not to work.

Some of the leaders said—-how could a sinner have the power to do such a miracle?

So the leaders were divided in their thoughts about the man’s healing.

Vs. 17 The leaders asked the man, What do you think of the man who healed you. The man said, He is a prophet.

Vs. 18 The Jewish leaders did not believe that the man had been born blind—-so they called in his parents.

Vs/. 19 They asked the parents—Is this your son? Was he born blind? How is it that he can see?

Vs. 20 His parents said—-We know this is our son and he was born blind.

Vs. 21 But we do not know how he can now see—or who opened his eyes. He is of age—ask him—let him speak for himself.

Vs. 22 The parents said this because they knew that the Jewish leaders said that if anyone said that Jesus was the promised Messiah or Christ—-they would be put out of the church/synagogue (name of a Jewish church building).

Vs. 23 The parents were afraid of the leaders so that is why they answered this way.

Vs. 24 The Jewish leaders called the “blind” man in the room again and said to him, Give God the glory. We know this man is a sinner.

Vs. 25 The man said—If the man is a sinner—I do not know. I know this—I could not see and now I can see.

Vs. 26 The leaders asked him again—what did he do to open your eyes.

Vs. 27 The man said—I told you, but you would not believe me. Why would you hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples?

(This question about becoming disciples of Jesus—showed the man had lost patience with the leaders and he was trying to make them a little angry.)

Vs.28 He did make them angry. They scolded him and said, You are his disciple—-we are disciples of Moses.

Vs. 29 God spoke to Moses—-but as for this fellow (man-Jesus)

we don’t know where he is from.

Vs. 30 The “blind” man said—-How strange—-you do not know where this man is from—but he opened my eyes.

Vs. 31 We know that God does not hear the prayers of sinners, but if any man worships God and does his will —God will hear him.

Vs. 32 Since the world began—no one has ever heard of a man who was born blind—was made able to see.

Vs. 33 If this man was not of God—he could do nothing.

Vs. 34 The leaders said—You were born in sin—-and you are trying to teach us?

They made him leave the church.

Vs. 35 Jesus heard that the Jewish leaders “threw” him out of the church. Jesus went looking for him. When he found him he said to him—-Do you believe on the Son of God?

Vs. 36 The “blind” man said to Jesus—Who is he? So I can believe on him.

Vs. 37 Jesus said—You have seen him. It is the person talking to you now.

Vs. 38 The man believed Jesus and began to worship him.

Vs. 39 Jesus said —I have come into this world to help people who can not see—-to see. And people who think they “see” —I will show them they are blind.

Jesus was talking about spiritual things. Jesus helped those who did not know so much about God to believe in him. And those who had a humble spirit and were willing to learn— began to believe him.

But the Jewish leaders who were so proud of how holy they were and how much they knew the Bible—would not believe in Jesus. They were “blind” to the truth about Jesus.

Vs. 40 Some of the Pharisees heard what Jesus told the “blind” man and they said to Jesus—-Are you saying we are blind?

Vs. 41 Jesus said—If you were “blind”—spiritually—-and were willing to believe in Jesus—you would not be guilty of sin. But since the Jewish leaders thought they knew everything about the scriptures and the promised Messiah—-yet they did not see that Jesus was the Messiah come—-they were spiritually blind and that was a sin.
