Gospel of John –Lesson 18

By Joyce Webb 2025

John Chip. 6 Vs. 40-71

Jesus has fed the 5000 with bread and fish. They followed him around the sea/lake of Galilee.

Jesus said to them—That they did not come because they believed in him—but they came hoping to get fed again.

Jesus is talking to them about bread. Jesus said that he was the Bread of Life. Those who “eat” of him—-would never be hungry again.

Jesus said he was the “bread” that came down from heaven.

(Like in the Old Testament—God sent “bread” down from heaven to feed the Hebrew people—they called it “manna”.

Jesus is saying he was the “bread” from heaven.)

Vs. 40 Jesus said—Everyone who believes in him—would have everlasting life. And Jesus/God would raise that person up in the last day. (Their body would be raised up out of the grave and be given a new heavenly body to live in heaven.)

Vs. 41-42 The Jews began to say—”He says he is the bread come down from heaven. Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? We know his father and mother. How can he say he came down from heaven?”

(Mary could have told them how it happened. The angel came to her and told her that the Holy Spirit would make the baby in her and she was to call him, Jesus.”)

Vs. 43 -44 Jesus said to them—do not be saying those things among yourselves. “No man can come to me, except the Father —which has sent me—draw (pulls) him: and I will raise him up in the last day.”

Vs. 45 Jesus said: It is written—in the prophets—They shall all be taught of God. Every man therefore that has heard, and has learned of the Father, comes to me.

Vs. 46 Not that any man has seen the Father—except he which is of God, (meaning–Jesus) —-he has seen the Father.

Vs. 47 True, I say to you—He that believes in me—has everlasting life.

Vs. 48 I am the Bread of Life.

Vs. 49 Your fathers (long ago) ate manna (bread that fell from heaven) when they were in the wilderness. They have all died.

Vs. 50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven, that if a man eats of it, he will not die. (Meaning—he will not die spiritually but will live in heaven.)

Vs. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If any one eats of this bread, he shall live forever. The bread that I give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

(Jesus is talking about giving his body on the cross for the sins of the world.)

Vs. 52 The Jews argued among themselves—-saying—-How can this man give us his flesh to eat?

Vs. 53 Jesus said—-True—Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man, and drink his blood—-you will have no life in you.

Vs. 54 He who eats my flesh, and drinks my blood, has eternal life. I will raise him up at the last day.

Vs. 55 For my flesh is meat truly. My blood is drink, truly.

Vs. 56 He that eats my flesh and drinks my blood dwells (lives) in me—-and I in him.

Vs. 57 As the living Father has sent me, and I live by the Father, he that eats me—he shall live by me.

Vs. 58 This is that bread that came down from heaven—-not as your fathers did eat manna—-and are dead.
He that eats of this bread will live forever.

Vs. 59 Jesus said these things in the Jewish church (synagogue)—as he taught in the town of Capernaum.

Vs. 60 Many of those following Jesus —when they heard him talk like this—said—”This is a hard saying. (This is hard to understand.)

(Jesus was talking about “eating of his flesh and blood”—as a spiritual thing. The people were thinking that they were to eat and drink of his human body and blood. It did not make sense to them.
They could not understand it —so they just turned away.)

Vs. 61 Jesus knew what they were saying among themselves. He said to them—Do these words offend you? Meaning—the words of eating his flesh and drinking his blood were too hard to accept and understand.

Vs. 62 Jesus said— What if you see the Son of Man ascend (go) up where he was before?

(That happened. Many of them saw Jesus as he went back up into heaven.)

Vs. 63 It is the spirit that quickens (gives life)—the flesh (man’s effort and work of himself) does not do any thing.

The words that I speak to you —they are spirit and they are life.

Vs. 64 There are some of you that do not believe.
Jesus knew from the beginning—who they were who would not believe, and who would betray him.

Vs. 65 Jesus said—I say to you, that no man can come to me, except (unless) it is given to him by the Father.

Vs. 66 From that time—many of his disciples (not the 12—but others who had followed Jesus) did not follow Jesus any more.

Vs. 67 Jesus said to the 12 —Will you also go away?

Vs. 68-69 Simon Peter said—Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and are sure you are the Christ, the Son of the living God.

V.s 70. Jesus said—Have I not chosen you 12? And yet one of you is a devil.

Vs. 71 Jesus spoke of Judas Iscariot—for he would be the one to betray him.
