Gospel of John –Lesson 17

John      Chp. 6    Vs. 15-39

Vs. 15 Jesus has done a miracle—he fed more than 5000 people—by using a boy’s lunch of 5 “loaves”—rolls and 2 fish.

The people seeing this— said that Jesus must be the prophet God said would come to them someday.

Jesus saw that these people wanted to make him a “king” of the Jewish people. But—it is not God’s time for Jesus to be a king.

Jesus knows that his coming to earth —in a human body—as a human—-is for him to die for the sins of humans—so that they do not have to die for their own sins. He is not to be a king at this time.

(Later—-a long time later—Jesus will come to earth again as a “king”.)

So, Jesus seeing what this group of people wanted to do—-Jesus got away by himself —-he went up into the mountain by himself.

Vs. 16 -17 It was dark now —and Jesus had not come back.

The disciples went down by the sea. They decide to go back across the water to the other side–toward the town of Capernaum.

Vs. 18 -20 As they were gong—-a strong wind came up and the waves of the water were high. It was scary and dangerous.

The disciples had gone about 3 or 4 miles out on the water —when they saw a “person shape” walking on the water toward their boat.

(It seems they did not know it was Jesus. They saw this “person shape” thing coming toward them. They did not know what it was. They thought it was a “spirit” of some kind. See Matthew chp. 14—Vs. 22-32

They had never seen a real person walk on water.)

Jesus called to them and said, “It is I. Do not be afraid.”

The disciples let him into the boat—–and immediately—the boat was at the land. (Another miracle.)

Vs. 22-23 The next day—the people came to where they had eaten the bread—to see Jesus. They knew that the disciples had gone across the sea/lake without Jesus.

But Jesus was not there.

There were other boats there from another place.

Vs. 24 When the people saw that Jesus was not there—they got into boats and went across to the other side. They went into the town of Capernaum—looking for Jesus.

Vs. 25 When they found Jesus—-they asked him—How did you get here to this side?

Vs. 26 Jesus did not answer their question— but he said—You look for me—not because you saw the miracle (and believed in me)—-but because you got food to eat.

Vs. 27 You should not be looking for things that satisfy your body for here and now—-you should be looking for something that lasts forever—eternal life.

The Son of Man will give you this eternal life—for this reason God has sent me.

Vs. 28 -29 They said—What shall we do?

Jesus said—Believe on the one God has sent.

Vs. 30 They said—Show us a sign—so we can believe you.

Vs. 31 Our fathers of old—-ate manna—bread—given to them while they were in the wilderness.

(These people have just seen Jesus take a boy’s small lunch and he made it be enough to feed 5000 people—-and they ask for a “sign”? What more could they want?)

Vs. 32 Jesus said—Moses did not give you that bread. My father in heaven gave you that bread. He will give you “true bread” from heaven.

Vs. 33 The “bread” of God that comes down from heaven —-gives life unto the world.

Vs. 34 The people said—Give us this bread every day.

Vs. 35 Jesus said—I am the bread of Life. He that comes to me shall never be hungry. He that believes on me shall never be thirsty.

Vs. 36 You have seen me—but you `do not believe in me.

Vs. 37 All (the people) that the Father gives to me—shall come to me. The ones who come to me I will not “cast out”—throw out.

Vs. 38 I have come down from heaven,— not to do my own will—but I do the will of him who sent me.

Vs. 39 This is the Father’s will–every one who sees the son and believes on him—may have everlasting life—-and I will raise him up at the last day.

(Jesus is speaking of the resurrection of the dead at the end of time.)
