John Chp. 4 Vs. 27-41
Verse 27 (Jesus and his disciples have traveled into the area of Samaria. In one of the towns, Jesus sat at the city well waiting for the disciples who had gone to buy food.
A woman came to the well to get water. Jesus began talking to her.
He told her things that she had done—things that a stranger would not have known. She thought he must be a prophet.
As they talked, Jesus told her that he was the promised Messiah that the scriptures spoke about.
At this time, the disciples came back with food.
They were surprised that Jesus was talking with this woman.
(She was a Samaritan —and the Jews were not friendly with them.
And, I think, in their culture— (way of doing things)—that it was unusual for a strange man to start up a conversation with a woman he did not know.)
The disciples were surprised, but they did not ask questions about it.
Vs. 28 The woman left her water pot there at the well, and went into the city to talk to the men of the city.
Vs. 29 She said to them, “Come see a man which told me all things that I have done. Is not this the Christ?”
Vs. 30 The men went with her to see this man.
Vs. 31 While she was gone, the disciples encouraged Jesus to eat.
But he said he was not hungry. He said, “I have meat to eat that you do not know about.” (Jesus, meant that —-in doing a ministry to this woman filled him with joy —-and he was not hungry for food any more—-doing this ministry satisfied him.)
Vs. 32 But the disciples did not understand what Jesus was talking about. They asked each other—”Did someone bring him food while we were gone?”
Vs. 34 Jesus said, “My meat is to do the will of the Father who sent me and to finish his work.”
Vs. 25 Jesus said: “Do not say there is yet four months until it is harvest time. I am telling you to look and see—-the fields are already white with the harvest.”
The disciples are talking about real food.
But Jesus is talking about “spiritual” food.
The disciples think Jesus is talking about an earthly harvest of fields—-but Jesus is talking about a spiritual harvest of winning people to believe in Jesus as the Son of God–the Messiah.
Vs. 36-39 Jesus continued to talk about the “harvest”. He said the person who “reaps”—(gathers in the harvest of the grain)—-gets paid a wage (money) —and so does the person who sowed the seed.
They both will be rewarded in heaven.
Jesus said to the disciples—”I sent you to reap that which you did not sow (plant seeds). Other men did that. Then you came and you reaped what they had sown.
Vs. 39 Many of the people of Samaria—believed in Jesus that day—–because Jesus told the woman things she had done—that Jesus as a stranger could not have known.
Vs. 40 The Samaritans asked Jesus to stay awhile in their city.
So Jesus stayed there for 2 days. And many more people believed in Jesus because of the things Jesus said.
Vs. 41 They said to the woman—-Now we believe—-not because of the things he told you—–but we have heard him ourselves and we know he is the Christ, the Savior of the world.
