Gospel of John –Lesson 11

John Chp. 4 Vs. 1-26
Vs. 1 The Jewish leaders—the Pharisees— heard that Jesus baptized more people than John did.
Vs. 2 This verse explains that Jesus, himself, was not baptizing any one—-but that Jesus’ 12 disciples were the ones doing the baptizing.
Vs. 3 Jesus left the area of Judea, and went into Galilee.
Vs. 4 Jesus had to go through Samaria on the way.
(The people of Samaria –and the rest of the Jewish people in other towns—-were not friendly with each other.
The Jewish people did not like the Samaritan people.
The reason went back to the Old Testament days—when the Assyrian army came into Israel and took many people away as captives.
A small group of the Jewish people were left behind in Israel. As time went on—these Jewish people married some of the Assyrians who were ruling over them.
So the people’s children were part Jewish and part Assyrian .
Also, these children learned the ways of the Assyrians and their worship of idols.
Some of them tried to worship both the God of heaven and idols at the same time. It became a mixed religion.
People who were fully Jewish—felt that the “mixed blood” of the Samaritans was a bad thing. Plus–their worship of idols was wrong.
The Jewish people called them bad names—like saying they were “dogs”—and such.
The Jewish people tried to go around Samaria if they could.)
Vs. 5 As Jesus traveled —he went through a town of Samaria called Sychar. It was a place that long ago in the Old Testament—Jacob gave some land to his son, Joseph.
Jacob’s well—from long ago—was still there.
Vs. 6 Jesus was tired from all that walking—-so he sat down on the edge of the well to rest. It was about the 6th hour of the day—which for the Jews was about noon.
(The Romans kept time a little differently than the Jewish people.
The Jewish people started counting a new day at 6:00 am.—so six hours later– would be noon.)
Vs. 7 A woman came to the well to get water. Jesus said to her, “Give me to drink.”
Vs. 8 The disciples had gone into the town to buy some food.
Vs. 9 The— woman said to Jesus—“How is it—that you being a Jew—would ask me—a Samaritan woman—for a drink. You know the Jews have no dealings with us.”
Vs. 10 Jesus said to her—”If you knew the gift of God—and who it is who has asked you for a drink—you would have asked for a drink from him—-and he would have given you living water.”
Vs. 11 The woman said—“You do not have any thing to get water with. The well is deep. From where will you get this living water?”
Vs. 12 She said: “Are you greater than our father, Jacob,—who gave us this well? He drank from this well, and his children, and his cattle.”
Vs. 13-14 Jesus said–”Whoever drinks from this well will be thirsty again. But whoever drinks of the water I shall give—shall never thirst.
The water I give him—shall be like a well of water springing up
into eternal life.”
Vs. 15 The woman said—”Give me of this water—so that I do not thirst again — and will not have to come here to draw water.”
Vs. 16 Jesus said–”Go call your husband—and come back.”
Vs. 17-18 The woman said–”I have no husband.”
Jesus said—”That is true. You have had 5 husbands—and the man you are with now—is not your husband.”
Vs. 19 The woman said: “I think you must be a prophet.”
Vs. 20 The woman said: “Our fathers worshipped in this mountain. You say—(meaning the Jews)—that the only place to worship is in Jerusalem.”
Vs. 21 Jesus said: “The hour ( the time) is coming—when people will worship the Father—but not in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem.
Vs. 22 You worship—but have little understanding of who or what you worship. We, Jews, know who we worship. For salvation comes through the Jews.
Vs. 23 Jesus said: “The time is coming—when people will worship the Father in spirit and in truth.
This is the way the Father wants people to worship him.
Vs. 24 God is a spirit —and they that worship him—must worship him in spirit and in truth.
Vs. 25 The woman said to him: “I know that the Messiah is coming and will be called The Christ. And when he comes—he will tell us all things.
Vs. 26 Jesus said: “The person speaking to you—is he.” Meaning—I am the Messiah, the Christ.
