5. Vs. 14-16 Animal sacrifice (killing of animals) was done at this time.

Long ago, in the Old Testament—God told Adam and Eve that because of their disobeying and sin—-the death punishment would be on them.

God killed an animal and took its skin to cover Adam and Eve’s naked bodies. This was a symbol of a “covering of blood” for their sin.

Later—God told the Jewish people that they could kill an animal—and its blood would be a “covering of the people’s sin”—-instead of the person dying for his own sin.

The main animal that was used was a lamb–1 year old—perfect lamb –no sickness, no marks or cuts—and it was to be killed and put on the altar as a substitute for the person’s sin.

If they could not afford to pay for a lamb—they could use a dove.

Some offerings—sacrifices also used– oxen, or goats.

In Vs. 14-16 Jesus went into the temple in Jerusalem. The temple has many rooms and hallways.

In the hallways, men set up tables and had animals there for people to buy for their sacrifice offering.

People came to the temple from the city—or other cities. Some traveled a long way to get to Jerusalem. So they did not have animals with them.

So when they got to the temple —they bought one.

History books tell us— that the men selling the animals in the temple —were not always honest.

They charged too much for an animal.

People would take a animal they bought to the priest to be checked and inspected to see if it was all okay. Sometimes, the priest was not honest—and he would find fault with the animal—and make them buy another.

Then the priest would take the animal that he said was not “fit” and give it back to the men to be sold again.

When Jesus saw all that was happening with this—Jesus became very angry at what they were doing.
