John Chp. 1 Vs.6-12
John the Baptist was a special birth.
His parents were too old to have a baby, but an angel told them that God was going to allow them to have a baby boy.
He was to be raised up in a special way because God had a special ministry for him to do.
You can read about his birth in Luke Chp. 1
Luke 1:41 John the Baptist was filled with the ____________
___________________ while he was still inside his mother.
John 1:7 John was to be a _____________ of the __________________ (Jesus) that was to come.
See Matthew 3:3 and Isaiah 40:3 John was to be a “voice” crying in the w____________________ telling the people to make their ways s_____________________. (Meaning they were to get right with God.)
John would preach and tell people to repent of their sin. Repent means to turn away from and go the other way.
John told them that soon someone would come who was greater than he was. This person coming would be the Lamb of God who would take away the _____________ of the world. John 1:29
John 1:9 Jesus would be the true ___________________ and would bring light to every man.
John 1:10 Jesus was in the world. The world was made by him.
(Because—Jesus was with the Father when the world was made.)
The world did not know him.
The people in the world thought he was just an ordinary man like them.
John 1:11 Jesus came to his own people, but they did not recognize him as the promised Messiah.
Who were Jesus’ own people? ___________________________
In the Old Testament, there are about 100 verses talking about the Messiah that God would send.
They tell about his birth, how he will die, what names or titles he will be called, what his ministry will be.
The Jewish people knew many of those verses. Many of these verses talk about this person and says he will be a savior.
In the Jewish mind —they always thought of this Messiah as a King —–who would rule over the Jewish people as their own nation.
The word “Messiah” means “savior” or someone who makes others free.
God promised them —not a king—-but a “savior”.
For many years the Jewish people had been ruled over by kings from other nations. Most of those kings and nations did not like the Jewish people.
Remember the verse in Genesis 3:15—-
Was God promising a “king” or a “saviour”— from Satan? _____________________________________________________________
John 1 Vs. 12
This is a most important verse.
This is a verse you should memorize. It is a verse to use when you are telling other people about Jesus and salvation.
“But as many as received him,—to them—gave he power to become the sons of God—even to them that believe on his name: “
Vs. 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
(Power to become the “sons of God”—is given to us only—if we receive Him—Jesus.
There are many people who are willing to believe in other gods, or to believe that everyone goes to heaven unless they are a murderer or something bad—-but that is not true.
Only those who receive Jesus—not another god—not another idea —-not by “being good”—can become the sons of God.)
