Titus

Chapter 2   Verses 1-15

Verse 1 Paul tells Titus—Talk about, (teach),—-things that are true doctrine. Meaning true sayings and teachings of Jesus.

(At that time, there were many new believers and some who began to preach—but they were twisting the teachings of Jesus to be not what Jesus meant. Or there were arguments about the teachings of Jesus and these arguments went on and on.

Paul is saying to Titus—do not get caught up in these kinds of arguments. Teach what Jesus said.)

Verse 2 Paul said—teach the men to be sober, serious, showing self-control in all things, being generous to those in need, to have patience with people.

Verse 3 Teach the women to live, and speak in ways that show holiness. They should not say false things about others. They should not drink too much wine. They should teach good things to others.

Verse 4 They should teach the younger women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children.

Verse 5 Teaching them to be discreet (carefully choose what they say about others). To be chaste (pure, without sin, especially sexual sin).

To be keepers at home—-meaning to not run around gossiping, and wasting time just having fun, —–but they should take care of things at home.
They should be good and doing good.

They should be obedient to their husbands. So that the word of God would not be blasphemed—spoken about in a bad way.

Verse 6 Teach the young men to also be sober and serious minded.

Verse 7 In all things show yourself (as their teacher) that you live in a way that shows good works. That you live knowing God’s truth. That you live not sinning. That you are serious minded and sincere.

Verse 8 When you talk—let your words be true and sincere—-so that no one will blame you or condemn you.

Then if someone tries to say something bad about you—-they will end up being ashamed—-because you have done nothing wrong.

Verse 9 Teach servants to be obedient to their masters. To try to please them in their work for them.
They should not talk back to them or show disrespect.

Verse 10 They should not steal from their master. They should be trustworthy and faithful. So that as Christian servants, they bring a good testimony for Christ.

Verse 11 For the grace of God —that brings salvation—has come to all men.

Verse 12 God’s grace teaches us —that we should put away all things that are not godly, put away all things that are worldly lusts and desires.
We should live seriously, with righteousness, being like Christ in this world.

Verse 13 We look for that blessed hope and the glorious appearance of the Great God and Savior Jesus Christ.

Verse 14 He gave himself for us. So that he could redeem us from all sin, and make us pure unto himself.

We are a “peculiar” people—-having much desire to do good works. (peculiar—unusual, different, strange)

(As Christians we are to be different from the world. We worship one God. We obey His teachings. We live in an honest, true, and holy way.)

Verse 15 Teach these things. Speak against wrong teachings.
Speak against doing sin.

Do not let anyone make you feel ashamed to be a preacher of the truth.
