Chp. 1 Vs. 1-31

Vs. 1-4 Paul gives greetings to the believers in Corinth.

Vs. 5-9 Paul tells them that God has worked in their lives.
They have a testimony that shows that God has changed them.

Vs. 7 Paul says that they have received from God—spiritual gifts—that will be with them until Jesus comes again.

5132. Vs. 8 Paul says —so that you will be b______________________ in the day of our Lord.

(In other words, God’s power will keep them true to Jesus—-until Jesus comes again.)

5133. Vs. 10-13 Read these verses. What are the people arguing about?

Paul reminds them that it is not important —who told them about the gospel of Jesus. It is not important who baptized them.

Any of these leaders were God’s “servants” to bring the gospel to people.

In the end—-they are not to follow “leaders”—-they are to follow
Christ.

5133. Vs. 17 Paul said he did not come preaching with w______________ of words. (He did not use fancy words.
He did not have a sermon full of big words that sounded fancy and educated. Paul spoke in easy, simple words so they would understand.)

(Paul was very educated. His teacher had been a famous teacher and highly thought of. Paul knew the scriptures as well as any Jewish leader.)

5134. Vs. 18 Paul said that preaching about the cross —to people who do not believe—sounds like a lot of ____________________.

5135. But to people who have believed what Jesus did on the cross—–it is not foolish—-it is the p_________________ of God unto

The simple message of the cross —- to people who believe it—-it brings forgiveness, joy, peace, takes away guilt, and sorrow.
It gives peace about the future.

And bring to nothing, the understanding of the prudent (wise).”

You hear people on TV mock and make fun of preachers. You hear them mock and make fun of “being saved”.

They think such ideas as foolish. In their own “wisdom” they think they do not need to be “saved”. They do not need God.

They think they are doing fine all by themselves.

That may be true. But what will happen when they die?

They may not believe it—but their spirit will continue to live—somewhere—in one of two places—heaven or hell.

God said so. The Bible says so. God warns everyone.

To ignore what God has said—is foolish.

Vs. 20 Paul talks about those leaders who teach and think they are wise. But the “wisdom that they teach”—God says is “foolish”.

5137. Vs. 21 The world by its wisdom does not know ____________.

5138. But—by preaching—though it sounds foolish to those educated people—-it has the power to save them that _________________.

5139. Vs. 22 The Jewish people—especially the leaders—often asked Jesus to give them a s_______________ (miracle) that he was God.

5140. The Greek people —were always talking about educated things and teachers who they thought spoke _________________.

(Neither group—were interested in the simple message of the gospel— they did not want to hear—-that man was under a death punishment for his sin—-but Jesus volunteered to die in their place.)

To the Jews, it was a stumbling block. (Something you fall over when you are walking.) When the Jews heard about Jesus dying on the cross for them—they could not accept it.

The Greeks, when they heard the gospel—-it sounded like crazy talk—foolish.

5142. Vs. 24 But for both the Jews and the Greeks—-to those who were willing to believe—the gospel message—became the p________________ of God, and the w__________________ of God.

Vs. 26 Paul said—-not many “wise” men with this world’s knowledge—-not many “noble” men, not many men who are ‘mighty”——— will believe in the gospel.

Vs. 28 God has chosen the base things—simple, lowly, things of this world—-things that are despised (looked on as not important)
——and God has chosen things which are not important—to bring about things that are important.

(The Greek educated men gave much attention to speakers and teachers of philosophy and “deep thinking” about the universe.

All of this kind of talk sounded so “deep” and “wise”. The Greeks loved this kind of talk.)

5147. The gospel—Jesus died in your place—-your sin put a death punishment on your head—was “crazy” talk to them.”

Vs. 29 God did this so that no flesh—no man—-should take g_________ in God’s presence.

Vs. 30 But to people who are in Christ Jesus—-God’s words and ways are wisdom. God’s words are righteousness, words that make us pure, words that redeem us.
