Chapter 14    Verse 26-52

Verse 26 After eating, the disciples and Jesus sang a hymn (song) and then they went to the mount of Olives. (There was a garden of olive trees there.)

Verse 27 Jesus said to them—Tonight, you will be offended (hurt feelings–fear) because of me.

It has been written, (in the Old Testament) “I will smite (strike, hit) this shepherd. The sheep will be scattered (sent in different directions). (Zechariah 13:7)

Jesus was called “the good shepherd”. Jesus will be hit. The disciples will be afraid by what happens—-they will run away.
Verse 28 Jesus said—But—after I am risen (come alive again)—-I will go before you into Galilee.

Verse 29 Peter said—Others may be offended—but I will not.
Verse 30 Jesus said to Peter—True, I say to you. That this night, before the cock (rooster) crows twice in the morning, you will deny me 3 times. Deny–(say you do not know me)

Verse 31 Peter was sure of himself. I said in a strong voice—If I should die with you, I will not deny you in any way.
All of the disciples agreed and said the same.

Verse 32 They came to a place—a garden—called Gethsemane.
He said to his disciples—Sit here awhile—I will pray.

Verse 33 He took 3 of the disciples with him (Peter, James, John) and walked farther into the garden. Jesus began to show that he was deeply upset in his spirit.

Verse 34 Jesus said to the three men—My spirit is deeply sad—even unto death.
Wait here with me and watch and pray with me.

Verse 35 Jesus went on farther by himself. He knelt on the ground and began to pray.

He prayed, If it is possible—let this “cup” pass from me. In other words, If it is possible, let me not have to do this thing.

Verse 36 He prayed—Father, all things are possible with you.
Take away the “cup”—this thing I have to do—but—(nevertheless)    It is not my will and what I want—it is your will I will do.

Verse 37 Jesus went back to where the 3 men are—they are sleeping. He said to Peter—You are sleeping? Could you not watch and pray with me for one hour?

Verse 38 Jesus said, Watch and pray, unless you enter into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.

(Jesus meant—-Inside of us—our spirits—we want to do what is right—-but when we face temptation and hard things—-our flesh—our bodies—are weak—we give in to the temptation.

Peter needed to pray—because he would soon be in a situation where he needed to be strong. He needed to pray for strength.

Verse 39 Jesus went away alone again. He prayed more. He said the same things.

Verse 40 Jesus came back to the 3 men and found them sleeping again. He said to them—-Sleep on. Take your rest. The hour has come. The Son of Man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners.

Verse 42. Get up. Let’s go. Look, the one who betrays me has come.

Verse 43 While Jesus was talking, Judas came up to Jesus.
There were many men with him. They had swords and spears.

They had come from the Jewish priests and church leaders.

Verse 44 Judas had told them that —whoever I kiss—that will be the man, Jesus,— you take him.

Verse 45 Judas went up to Jesus and said “Master“, and he kissed him. (In that country, men greeted other men—not with a handshake—but a kiss on each cheek.)

Verse 46 The men that were with Judas—came and took hold of Jesus and began to lead him away.

Verse 47 One of the disciples, had a sword. He hit one of the men taking Jesus. It was a servant of the high priest. The sword cut off his ear. (See John 18:10, Luke 22: 50-51)

Verse 48 Jesus said to the men—You come here against me like I am a thief. You have swords, and spears to take me.

Verse 49 I was with you every day in the temple teaching. You did not take me then. But the words of the scripture must be fulfilled.
( Isaiah 53:7)

Verse 50 Then–all of the disciples left Jesus.

Verse 51 One of them—a young man—(Bible teachers think it was John) followed secretly.

He had a linen cloth around him—(probably a night shirt). When one of the men in the crowd–saw him—he tried to grab him. But he only got hold of his shirt. They tore it off of him and the young man ran off naked.
