Chapter 12     Verse 35-44

Verse 35-37 Jesus was in the temple teaching. He said, “ How is it that the scribes say that Christ is the son of David?”

David said–by the Holy Spirit speaking through him—”The Lord said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool.” see Psa. 110:1

Bible teachers explain this verse.
Jesus said that David said these words by the Holy Spirit.

Amplified Bible
A Psalm of David. The LORD (Father) says to my Lord (the Messiah, His Son), “Sit at My right hand until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet [subjugating (making) the enemies into complete submission].”

This is what God the Father said to Christ, when Christ being risen from the dead, Christ ascended on high, and entered into the most holy place; God the Father told him to sit down at his (the Father’s) right hand, — Christ having done the work of man’s salvation, —this showed affection and approval of him.

David was calling God’s Son—Christ—”my Lord”.
David called God the Father “The Lord”.

God had promised David that someone in his family would be king of Israel—for always–forever. II Samuel 7: 12-13, I Kings 8:25

David –(by the Holy Spirit speaking through him)—saw into the future and saw that his son would be his “Lord”.

His son would be greater than he (David)—-and David would bow before him and call him Lord.

Jesus was born in the family of David—the tribe of Judah.

Verse 37 David called him “Lord”. So, how is he is son?

Jesus was David’s son—a descendent through Mary—and Jesus was God—by the Holy Spirit moving upon Mary.

(Jesus asked the crowd this question. He wanted them to think about this verse and what it meant.

The Jewish leaders did not want to understand this. The people in the crowd heard what Jesus said gladly.

Verse 38 Jesus said to the people, Be careful about the scribes. They go about wearing long robes. They love it when people in the market and streets greet them with respect and honor.

Verse 39 They love to have the best honored seats in the churches, and at feasts.

Verse 40 Yet—they devour (eat up—take from) widows (women whose husbands have died).

It was a custom for a husband to make a will —that when he died—a church leader would be appointed to take care of the wife-widow

In those days, men usually took care of money things.

These church leaders should have been worthy of trust to be honest and do the best to help the widow. But it seems that they did not—they cheated her and took from her—-instead of taking care of her as they should have.

Widows were usually very poor and they had no husband to bring in money. Women did not go to work away from home in those days. A widow would have to depend on a son to take care of her—if she had a son. Or depend on this church leader to take care of her money business.

The scribes made long prayers—(to impress people).

Jesus said—These (scribes) will receive greater damnation (punishment)—-because of their pride and not being sincere in their worship to God.

Verse 41 One day Jesus sat in the temple near a box for offerings. Many people came in and put money in the box. Many of them were rich and put in a lot of money.

Verse 42 A poor widow woman came in and she put in two mites which make a farthing—like our penny.

Verse 43-44 Jesus said to his disciples— This woman has put in more than anyone else. They put in much –but they had much. She had only the 2 mites—- and she put all that she had into the offering box.
