Isaiah 8:14 talked about a “stumbling block” and a “rock of offence”—something a person would trip and fall over —-something a person would find it hard to believe or accept.

“Whoever believes on him—should not be ashamed.” Paul is talking about Jesus. Jesus was the “stumbling block” to the Jewish people. Jesus is the One they found it hard to believe in and accept as the promised Messiah, Son of God.
——————————————————–

In the Book of Romans—-Paul writes over and over—many examples and details—-of how we become “right with God”—–not because of who we are—like the Jews—-or because of our
“works”.

The Jews in Rome—-think—-that because they are Jews—-and have the “laws of the Old Testament”—-and the promises that God said to Abraham—-they are “righteous”.

Paul writes in many of his letters to the Jews—–that we are “righteous” because of our faith—-not because we have “worked for it by our own goodness”.

If we were able to “work it out our self“ —-Jesus would not have needed to die for our sins.

Every man has sinned. Every Jew has sinned. Because of the sin—God said the “soul that sins shall die”.

Death—eternal death—hell—hangs over each person.

We can not be good enough in our own self by what we do.

That is why Jesus came to pay the death punishment for us.

The Jews have felt that they were God’s special people because God gave them the OT laws.

Because they were “special”—God loved them more than other people. God loved them more than those Gentiles who worshipped idols.

The Jews forgot that in their history—-they also worshipped idols and God punished them by letting the Babylonians take over their land and took the Jewish people to Babylon for 70 years.

Only a few of them came back to Israel. From that time on, Israel did not grow much. They had a hard time being free from other nations taking them over.

When Jesus came to the Jewish people in Israel—the Romans had taken them over and was ruling over them.

As Paul said—-God left a “remnant” a few of them or they would have all been wiped out.

God has a right as God to choose who He will to be his “special”
people. Paul talks about the “vessels” —that God made some to honor and some to dishonor.

God chose the Jews. God chose Abraham—who believed God and had faith in God to obey Him.

Because of that—God promised to bless Abraham family forever.

Many years later, Jesus came into that family line—the Jews.

The Jews had their own ideas of what they thought this promised “savior” was going to be. They thought he would be a powerful king and rule over them and defeat their enemies.

God had bigger plans. God was sending a “savior” for their souls to save them forever—eternally.

That was the part that the Jewish mind was having trouble with.

They already thought because they obeyed the law—the best they could—even though sometimes they failed—–that they were “good” and “righteous”.

Paul tries to tell them that they can never be good enough in themselves—-law or no law—-they will fail—they are guilty of sin—-with a death punishment over them. It is only Jesus who has paid the death punishment for them.
