Chapter 1 Verses 12-15

Verse 12 Jesus had just been baptized in the Jordan River —by John the Baptist.

In the Old Testament, when a man became a priest,—-
A sacrifice was made on altar,
man was washed in water,
man was anointed with oil.

Bible teachers think that Jesus’ baptism in water was a “ceremony” like what was done in the Old Testament—when a man became a priest.

The Bible does not say anything about a sacrifice being made first.

Jesus, himself, would be a “sacrifice” later.

The “baptism” in water—was the washing in water.

The dove represents the Holy Spirit. Anointing of oil —represents the Holy Spirit on a person.

When Jesus came up out of the water, — the Father’s voice from heaven said, “This is my son, in whom I am well pleased.”

I have heard that this is something that a priests says when he anoints his son to be priest.

The tribe of Levi was chosen to be the tribe to have the men be priests. Men from other tribes–did not become priests.

Jesus is not from the tribe of Levi. He was from the tribe of Judah.
When David became the king —God promised him that his family tribe would always been king.

Jesus was of David’s tribe–Judah. Jesus is from the tribe to be kings. Jesus will be king over all someday.

Jesus is not of the tribe to be priests. The Bible says that Jesus is a priest after the order of Melchizedek.

Melchizedek was a priest that Abraham gave tithes to. (a tithe is 1/10th of money, things earned)

The Bible does not say how Melchizedek became the priest.
We do not know of his family line.

From the Bible, we know nothing about him, except that Abraham honored him as a priest and gave him a tithe,

Melchizedek was well-known and respected.

Jesus is a priest in the same way that Melchizedek is a priest.

Jesus is a priest because God the Father gave him the authority to be priest. It was not an earthly father who gave Jesus the right to be priest—-but his heavenly father.

As Jesus came up out of the water, God the Father from heaven said, “You are my son in whom I am well pleased.”

The Holy Spirit in the form of a dove—-came down upon Jesus at that time.

Verse 12 The Holy Spirit led Jesus out into the wilderness. The wilderness is a dry area, not many trees, mostly tall grasses. There are mostly just wild animals that live there.

Verse 13 Jesus was there for 40 days and 40 nights.

The devil/Satan came to tempt Jesus. The Matthew chp. 4 tells of what the devil said to Jesus.

Jesus did not eat during that time. He only drank water.

The angels ministered to Jesus, meaning they gave him strength and help.

Verse 14 Mark tells that some time after this, John was put into prison. (The Roman ruler over the Jewish people, Herod Antipas was angry with John, because John said it was wrong for Herod to divorce his wife and then marry his brother’s wife.) Luke 3:19,20

Jesus went into the Galilee area to preach.

Verse 15 Jesus said: “The time has been fulfilled and the kingdom of God is at hand.”

Meaning: The prophecies of the Old Testament about the Messiah coming —-has now happened. Jesus was telling them that he was the fulfillment of the prophecy. He was the promised Messiah.

Because he was the Messiah, the kingdom of God (Jesus-God) was here among them.

Jesus said: “Repent” “Believe in the gospel.” Gospel means
“good news:.

Repent means to stop doing sin, and turn and do what is right.
