4179. Peter did not want to eat those animals. Why? __________

______________________________________________________

In the Old Testament, God had given them rules about what kind of animals they were allowed to eat. The four legged animals that they could eat—were animals that did not eat other animals—-they ate grass and plants. Which meant their meat would be cleaner from diseases and other problems—such a worms, etc.

The birds they were allowed to eat— ate seeds or bugs. They were not allowed to eat birds that ate dead animals—or caught animals.

The fish had to have fins and scales. They were not allowed to eat sea animals that were sea bottom feeders or the larger animals that caught other fish to eat.

Most fish eat smaller fish or minnows, etc.

Now in the vision, God was telling Peter to eat animals that had been on God’s “No” list.

Peter was in shock.

God was preparing Peter to go to the non-Jew Gentiles to tell them about Jesus. He would be expected to eat in their homes. They ate meats that the Jews did not eat. Most Jews would not even eat anything in a Gentile home.

If Peter was going to be a missionary to the Gentiles, he was going to be eating with them. So God let him know that it was okay to eat what they ate.

The rules God gave the Jews back in the Old Testament were the best way of eating meat that would be cleaner and free of disease.

But God was moving the disciples out into the world to be missionaries to tell about Jesus. They needed to be able to eat what was served to them by the people they were living with.
