Chapter 19 Verses 28-48

Verse 28 Jesus comes near to Jerusalem. He is near two villages—Bethphage and Bethany. `

Verse 29 Jesus told his disciples to go into the village. There they would see a colt tied. This colt had never had a rider on his back.

They were to take the colt and bring it to Jesus.

Verse 31 Jesus said, If any one asks you what you are doing—tell them that the Lord has need of it.

Verse 32 -34 The disciples found the colt. And when someone asked them what they were doing—they said , the Lord needed him. The men allowed them to take the colt.

Verse 35 The disciples brought the colt to Jesus. They put their coats/robes on the colt’s back. Jesus got on the colt.

Think about it: The colt has never had any one on its back before. Yet it did not buck and try to throw Jesus off its back. Amazing !

As if the colt knew God was on his back.

As Jesus rode the colt, people put their coats/robes down on the ground in front of the colt. (Like putting down a “red carpet”—as one would welcome an important person or leader or king.)

Verse 37 When Jesus was near the pathway that went down the Mount of Olives to Jerusalem—there were many people watching, singing, praising God, for all the miracles they had seen Jesus do.

Verse 38 Then they said, “ Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.

Verse 39 Some of the Jewish leaders, the Pharisees, were with the crowd of people. They said to Jesus, Tell your disciples not to say those things.

Verse 40 Jesus said: If they were quiet and did not say those things, then the rocks would cry out and say those things.

(The Jewish leaders did not like it —-that the people were calling Jesus “King”. They did not like it —-that the people thought Jesus came in the “name of the Lord”. They did not like it— that the people were giving Jesus praise like as to God.

The Jewish leaders did not believe that Jesus was any of that.

Yet they could not explain how Jesus healed people and gave dead people life again.)

Verse 41-44 When Jesus got near the city of Jerusalem —he wept–cried over it. He said, If you —Jerusalem could have found peace. Now it is too late for you. Your enemies will come against you. They will destroy you. They will not leave one stone upon another.

Because— God came to “visit” you and you did not know it. (You did not see it or believe it.)

(70 years later the Roman army came and destroyed Jerusalem.)

Verse 45-46 Jesus went into the temple. He made those who were selling things to leave the temple. He said: My house shall be a house of prayer. You have made it a “den of thieves”. (Because those who were selling—-animals and other things for offerings and sacrifices—they were not honest and cheated the people.)

Verse 47-48 Jesus taught every day in the temple. Every day the priests and Jewish leaders tried to find a way to kill him. They could not—– because there were so many people there to hear Jesus.
