St. John 19 Vs. 25-38
3972. Vs. 25 Who are the four women standing by the cross of Jesus? __________________, the _________________ of Jesus
_______________________________________________
________________, the wife of ____________________
_________________ _______________________
3973. Vs. 26, 27 Who was standing next to Jesus’ mother?
_____________________________________________________
(Bible teachers say this man was John—who wrote this book.)
(Many of us wonder why Jesus would ask John to take care of his mother.
Jesus was the oldest son of Mary and it was his responsibility to take care of his mother. So, Mary’s husband, Joseph must have died.
At this time, Jesus’ brothers were not believers —meaning that they did not believe that Jesus was the Son of God. Two of his brothers became believers —-but after Jesus came alive from the dead.
It does not seem that Jesus’ brothers were there at the cross.)
3974. Vs.28 Jesus said, ________ _________________.
What did the soldiers give him? _______________________
3975. Vs. 29, 30 Jesus last words were, _________ ________
_______________________.
3976. Vs. 30 The King James Version of the Bible says that after saying this, Jesus “gave up the ghost”. What does the old fashioned saying mean? _______________________________
3977. The day Jesus died was the day the Jews began to prepare for the Passover. This was a very important day to the Jews.
The Jews did not want these 3 men hanging on the crosses during their Passover days. They wanted them dead and their bodies taken down. To hurry up their dying—-what did the soldiers do to them? ________________________________________________
3978. Vs. 33 When they came to Jesus, did they break his legs?
_____________ Why? ________________________________
See Exodus 12:46 When Moses told them how to prepare the lamb for eating, they were not to break any of its bones.
See also, Psalms 34:20
The lamb, was a symbol, or was “in place of” Jesus. The lamb died instead of the person—-for the person’s sins. Jesus died in place of people—for their sins.
As the people were not to break the bones of the animal, so Jesus’ bones were not to be broken. Since Jesus had already died —-they did not need to break his bones.
This was another fulfillment of prophecy about the Messiah.
3979. Vs. 34-37 One of the soldiers did do something to Jesus. What did he do? __________________________________________
See Psalms 22:18 —it talks about hands and feet
See Zechariah 12:10—being pierced
3980. Vs. 38 Who came to take Jesus’ body and put it in a sepulchre (like a cave opening where the dead are buried). It was in a garden. The man bought many spices to put on Jesus’ body.
__________________, of ________________________
This burying place was probably where Joseph planned to be buried some day. It was empty.
Joseph was a rich man.
See prophecy—Isaiah 53:9
