In these verses, Jesus is showing a picture of himself as a shepherd of sheep—-or the one who leads and watches over his people.
There is one door into the fold or pen where the sheep are kept.
This door is Jesus. There is no other way to get into the pen of sheep.
Jesus is the only way to come into the group of believers to belong to Jesus.
People may try to get into heaven by other ways—-by other religions—-by other ways of believing—-but the only way into heaven with Jesus’ “sheep”—-is to come through the door—which is Jesus.
We must come to Jesus—believe in him—ask him for forgiveness—if we want to come into his heaven and be one of his “sheep”.
Because—Jesus is the only one who gave his life and died to pay our death punishment for sin.
When we come to Jesus and belong to his group of “sheep”—–we know his voice. We follow him.
We trust him to lead us in safe paths. We trust him to lead us to “pastures” where we have what we need to eat and live.
Jesus said to these Jewish people listening to him—-I have other sheep that are not part of your group. I have to call them to follow me, also.
Jesus was talking about non-Jewish people —the Gentiles.
At that time, the Jewish people thought they were God’s special people and the Gentiles were not part of that.
Most of the non-Jewish people did not believe in the true God in heaven. They had not heard of him. They worshipped idols.
Jesus came to the Jews first, but after he came alive after he died, he would send out the disciples to go to all people in the world—to tell of Jesus and how he died for their sin.
Gentile people would be God’s people, too. Gentiles and Jews will all be one group of believers —”sheep‘— Jesus will be the shepherd of all.
