St. John 8 Vs. 36-47
3690. Jesus is telling them, that if they are doing sins, they are like a “____________________” to that sin.
Sin is deceiving. Sin looks like pleasure and fun. But really it takes control in your life.
It becomes the “master” and you become the “servant”—-because you always desire and want that sin. That sin calls to you. That sin pushes you to do it. That sin has power in your life. You are weak to that sin.
3691. Vs. 36 Jesus said, “If the ___________ shall make you ________________—you will truly be free.”
(We cannot get rid of sin by our self. We need God’s help and forgiveness and power to break sin’s power over us.
When we invite Jesus into our lives, He gives us the power of the Holy Spirit ——and it is more powerful than sin’s power.)
3692. Vs. 37 Jesus tells the Jewish leaders—-you are the “_____________” or children of Abraham. (Abraham was a godly man and obeyed God.)
Yet you try to ___________ me. The words that I say and teach—you will not listen.
3693. Vs. 38 Jesus said, I tell you what I have seen of my _____________________.
You tell me things, you have seen from your father.
3694. Vs. 39 The Jewish leaders said, _______________ is our father.
Jesus said, You do not do the _______________ of Abraham.
3695. Vs. 40 You are trying to _______________ me,
I am a man who is telling you the truth. I have heard that truth from God.
Abraham did not refuse to listen to God’s truth. Abraham listened to God’s words.
3696. Vs. 41 You do the works of your father.
They said to Jesus, We are not children of f_________________.
(Fornication means having sex without marriage to that person.)
(The Jewish leaders knew about Jesus’ mother Mary being pregnant before she married Joseph. She was legally engaged to him by a ceremony, but the marriage ceremony had not yet happened.
In those days, the parents arranged for a marriage of their children. Mary’s parents had arranged for her to marry Joseph.
The engagement —- in their country—was a legal agreement.
To break the engagement—they would need a judge and break the engagement legally.
The Jewish leaders knew that Mary got pregnant before the marriage ceremony happened.
So, they thought of Jesus as a “bastard”—-meaning someone who does not have a legal father.
Everyone has a father, somewhere—-but the word bastard meant that there was no legal father—the child was made in the mother before marriage.
In another place in the Bible, some of the Jews called Jesus a bastard.)
The Jewish leaders said, We have one Father, God is our Father.
3697. Vs. 42 Jesus said, If _________ were your father, —-you would _______________ me.
Because I come from God. I did not come here by my own power.
I came because he sent me.
3698. Vs. 44 Jesus said, You are of your father—the __________________.
The desires and lusts of the devil, your father, is what you do.
3699. He, the devil, was a ____________________.
From the beginning of the earth, he murdered. (Remember Cain killed his brother, Abel?)
(The Jewish leaders are wanting to murder Jesus.)
The devil did not live by the truth.
There is no truth in him.
When he speaks, he lies.
He speaks for his own self.
He is a ___________________, —and the ________________ of lies.
Vs. 45 I tell you the truth, but you will not believe me.
Vs. 46 Which one of you can show me that I have sin or have done a sin? Yet—you will not believe my words as truth.
I have no sin—-so why don’t you believe what I say?
3700. Vs. 47 He that is of ____________—hears God’s words.
You do not hear them, because you are not of God.
