Chapter 3 Verses 12-24
Vs. 12 John talks about how Cain did not love his brother, but killed him .
Vs. 14 John says–We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brothers (other people).
He that does not love his brother is still dead in spirit.
(In other words—when we receive Jesus’ forgiveness and his Spirit lives in us—-we will have love for others.
If we do not have love for others—-then we do not have the Spirit of God in us.)
Vs. 15 Whoever hates his brother is a murderer (in his heart).
We know that murderers do not have eternal life.
Vs. 16 This is how we know that we have the love of God in us,—he gave his life for us, and we should give our lives for others ( our brothers).
Vs. 17 Any one who has food, clothing, money, etc.—and sees his brother needs something—but will not help them— then how can you say the love of God is in that person?
Vs. 18 Let us not just say we love others, —we must do things that show we have love.
Vs. 19 It is by what we do—that we know we are living in the truth. We can stand before the Lord knowing we did right. Even if we have doubt in our hearts, God knows our hearts.
Vs. 20 If our minds are free of blame and we know we did right, we can come to God feeling sure that He will receive what we ask for, —-because we have done what God has told us to do and we please him.
Vs. 23 This is God’s commandment—that we believe in the name of the God’s son, Jesus Christ, and that we love each other.
Vs. 24 Those who obey God’s commandment live in fellowship with him, and he will live in them.
We know he lives in us —because the Holy Spirit lives in us.
