Matthew Chp. 22

2230. Vs. 15-22 The Pharisees (church leaders) wanted to get rid of Jesus. They wanted to find some reason they could arrest him. They thought to try to ask him hard questions so that maybe he would say something that was against the Jewish law or scripture then they could blame him.

So they asked him if he thought is was right to pay taxes to Caesar. Rome ruled over the Jewish people. The Jewish hated it. And they hated that they had to pay taxes to those who forced rule over them.

Jesus saw what they were trying to do. Jesus asked them whose _________________ is on the coin? They said ______________________________. Jesus said Then give to

Caesar the things that belong to Caesar. But give to God the things _______________________________________________________________.

Were the Pharisees able to catch Jesus saying something wrong? ________________

2231. Vs 23-30 The other big group of church leaders were the Sadducees. They asked a question. In the Jewish law, if a man married but had no children, the man’s brother was to marry the widow. And children born to her would be given the property of her dead husband. So the church leaders made up this story of 7 brothers. Each one dying. They all married the same woman.

The church leaders asked when the resurrection happens and they all get to heaven whose wife will she be because all 7 had married her?

Jesus told them that in heaven there is no _____________________________. Jesus said they are as the angels in heaven.

Some people have read this verse and they have believed that when people die they become angels. That was not what Jesus meant. Jesus meant that just as the angels do not marry neither will those people who go to heaven be “married“ anymore.

Marriage is for earth to create babies. There is no need of that in heaven. We may know a person that they were our wife or husband, but that same kind of relationship that we had on earth will be no more. We will be beyond the need of that kind of relationship.

For some people that will not be good news. They are looking forward to reuniting with their loved one. For others who were not so happy on earth may be glad.

None of our earthly relationships will continue in the same way in heaven as they were on earth. We may see a person and know that they were our mother, father, son, daughter, etc. that we loved on earth but our relationship with them in heaven will be different than what we had on earth.

We all will have moved up to higher ways of thinking and being.

Since this group of church leaders did not believe in the resurrection of the body. Jesus told them this: Have you not read the scriptures where God said He was the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob? Exodus 3:6 16 God was talking to Moses. Abraham, Isaac and Jacob had been dead a long time before. But when God talked to Moses, He said I am the God of Abraham……. Meaning that God was still their God. God is not the God of dead people. He is the God of living people. So Abraham and the others were still living—-not dead in the ground but in heaven alive.

2232. The Pharisees came with another question. They asked Jesus

______________________________________________________________________ Vs.36

2233. What did Jesus answer them? _________________________________________

________________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________________

Vs. 40 The meaning: If we love God with all our heart and obey Him, we will love others and do right to them. All of God commandments build on this understanding.

2234. Vs. 41-46 Jesus asked them a question. He said Whose son is the Messiah or Christ to be? They said, He is to be David’s son.

So Jesus asked them Then why is it when moved by the Spirit of God David called him Lord. If he is his son, why did he call him Lord?

Did the church leaders have an answer? _____________

Jesus was the “son of David”. Jesus’ mother was from the line of Nathan — one of David’s sons.

Even though Joseph was only his earthy father not of his blood because the Holy Spirit was the father Joseph was also from David’s line from David’s son Solomon.

So Jesus was the “son of David” but because he was born with God’s divine nature in him He was David’s Lord.
