People listened. The church leaders did not like it. So they asked Jesus, who gave you the authority (right, power) to speak in the temple like this.

Jesus did not answer them. He was very wise. He said I will answer your question, if you will answer a question of mine. So Jesus asked them Was John’s baptism from heaven? Or was it just a man’s idea?

2210. The church leaders did not want to answer because all the people were waiting to hear what they said. The church leaders knew the people thought John was a __________________________ sent by God. (The church leaders just wanted Jesus to say He was from God. They were looking for more reasons to kill Jesus. Jesus did not fall into their little trick.) (Jesus had said that he was from God many times before when he was with the disciples and with the crowds of people. He was not keeping it a secret.) (The church leaders were wanting Jesus to do something that they felt they could arrest him for and when he was right there in the temple they hoped for an opportunity. But it was not time for Jesus’ death just yet, so Jesus in his wisdom did not fall for their trick.)
