Matthew Chapter 13 Vs. 1-33
2053. Vs. 1-4 Jesus tells the story about a man who “sows seeds” or plants seeds. Long ago to “sow” seeds, a man would take a handful of seeds and would make a sweeping move with his arm and let the seed fall on the ground. This is called “broadcasting the seed”. They cast it in a broad arch.
Some of the seed fell in good soil and some of it fell among thorns or stones.

2057. Vs. 10-17 The disciples asked Jesus why he spoke in “parables”. A parable is an earthly story with a heavenly or spiritual meaning. Jesus told them that only some people will be willing to hear what he says. Other people will have hard hearts and will not hear him.
Jesus also said that things told about the coming Messiah were like a “mystery” to the people of the Old Testament. But for the disciples and the people of their time, they would be able to understand about the Messiah, because Jesus was the Messiah and he would explain things to them.
Vs. 18 Jesus explains the story of the sower.

What does this story mean? The kingdom of heaven will start out small, but it will grow to become very large. We know today that the whole world knows about Jesus. In Jesus’ day, only a few people knew about him in Jerusalem and a few cities.

Leaven is yeast. When you put even a little yeast into a dough the whole thing will grow with the yeast. So the kingdom of heaven starts small grows big.
