Matthew Chp. 5 Vs. 17

1014. Vs. 17 Jesus said that he did not come to do away with the Old Testament law.

He came to fulfill the law. He said until the earth disappears God’s law will stay.

Vs. 21 The law says Do not murder.

Jesus said that if a person is angry with his ___________________

Without a cause (reason) that person is in danger of _________________________.

Why do you think Jesus said anger was like murder? ________________________

____________________________________________________________________

Jesus warns us that our thoughts are important. Thoughts influence our spirit.

Thoughts begin actions. Anger leads to acts against others. Stop the anger and you stop the actions against another.

1015. If you curse someone you are in danger of ______________________________.

The King James Bible says “Do not say Thou fool.” “Raca” meaning “worthless”.

It meant calling someone a fool meaning having no worth so bad and empty headed as to be completely without redemption.

No one is completely “worthless” and God can save and change anyone who turns to Him.

Telling someone to “go to hell” or “damming” him .. should never come from a Christian.

We never want someone to be “dammed” or go to hell—–not even saying it in anger.

In the King James Bible the words “without cause” are used. I have looked at what other Bible teachers have said about that. There seem to be different ideas.

One of the teachers says it means someone who is just an angry person. They are always angry about things.

When we read other things Jesus said, and when we read what Paul and others wrote we learn that we are to be in control of our anger. Yes, we feel anger. But we need to be in control and not sin. We are not do or say things in anger that are sinful.

We can tell others how we feel. We can explain our anger. But to call them damming names or wish evil upon them is not for us to do. God alone decides who is to be dammed and judged with hell.

1016. Vs. 23-26 When you bring an offering to the Lord and you remember that your brother has __________________________________________, you are to leave the offering and go ________________________________________________________.

You should come to an agreement with an enemy _______________________

And not let it go on and on because then you may end up in ______________________.

Jesus was saying It is wise to try to come to an agreement with a person rather than go to court and a judge and end up in jail or paying a fine.

We do things differently in our nation. But the idea is to make things right with people as soon and as quickly as you can and not let things go on for a long time. Old anger problems just get bigger.

1017. Vs. 27 Jesus said the law says Do not do adultery. But Jesus said, If a man

_______________________________ on a woman with ____________________________ he has done adultery with her in his heart.

1018. So—–is it a sin to look a pornography? ____________________ Or other books and pictures like that?

1019. Vs. 29 Jesus said if your eye makes you sin what should you do?

________________________________________________________________________

I do not think Jesus meant for a person to cut off a hand or put out an eye. He was making a point. It would be better to go through life with one hand or one eye rather than sin and lose your eternal life.

We know that just cutting off a hand or putting out an eye will not make you stop sinning. Sin comes from your thoughts and what you do with the thought. Sinful thought may come into our mind——but we have to stop the thought.

1020. Vs. 31,32 Jesus said we should not divorce except for what reason? ___________________________________________________________________

1021. Vs. 35-37 Jesus warns about making promises and vows. He says it is best not to make a vow just say a simple ______________ or ________________.

Jesus is not talking about making a promise to take your kids to a game or a promise to do something for someone. He talking about legal binding kinds of promises. Jesus means for us to think very carefully before we make those kinds of promises. Sometimes we need to make those promises when we buy a house, or car, or get a loan or get married etc. These promises need to be made with much thought.

Jesus is saying Do not swear by God that you will do this or that. You do not know what the future will bring. You do not have the power to change any of it. So do not speak like you have such power. Do not speak proudly like a bold, brassy person.

1022. Vs. 38-42 The law said if some puts out your eye you have a right to put out their eye. Jesus said Do not do this. Have more love and patience. Be humble. Be loving. Be kind.

Jesus said if they hit you do what? _______________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________

I do not think Jesus wanted us to be a person who lets others “walk all over us”. We need to have people respect us and treat us right. We do not need to act in a way that is so weak that people think we are dumb and they cheat us and speak to us like we are dirt.

Jesus does not want us to be “fighting” people always angry and “paying back”

any one who does not do right to us. There are many times in life that people insult us,

or are not always fair, or choose someone else and not us, or leave us out, etc.

Jesus is saying Do not be looking for every little thing that someone does to you that is not right and “pay them back” for doing wrong to you. Learn to let some things go.

Behave like a Christian. Do not always be demanding that everyone treat you right.

There are times when you need to stand up for something or to be treated right or spoken to with respect. But it does not need to be part of your personality to be watching for every little thing someone does you wrong.

Vs. 41, 42 If a person asks you to go ____________________________________ then go with him _______________________________________.

This refers to something in Jesus’ day. The Romans ruled over the land of the Jewish people. The Roman soldiers could make a man carry his pack of equipment, food, etc.,

for 1 mile. The Jewish man would have to do it. Jesus was saying, do more. Go with him 2 miles. Why? It would be a kind and loving thing to do. If a person offered to go the second mile, the Roman soldier would probably ask why he would be willing to do it.

Then the person could tell him that Jesus said to do it. The Roman soldier would want to know about Jesus. The person could tell him about Jesus and what he taught.

Doing good to others gives us an opportunity to tell them about Jesus. Around the world, Christian people give food, help to people who need it so we can tell them about Jesus. Why are we giving? Because of Jesus. He taught us to be kind.

People who believe in Jesus do more in the world to help others than any other group.

1023. Vs. 43-48 Jesus said we should do good to our ___________________________.

It is easy to do good to those who are nice to us. It is hard to do good to those who are mean to us. Jesus is telling us to do good to them. Because they will see we show love and kindness because of Jesus.

We are not to be mean and hateful even if they are.

Vs.45 God reminds us that He sends rain on those who are evil and those who are good.

If we are kind to those who hate us we are different than other people and we will have an opportunity to tell them about Jesus.
