Jesus quoted Deut. 8:3 Moses is telling the people about how God led their parents through the wilderness after they left Egypt. He said that because the people would not trust God about going into the Promised Land they were too afraid, they God let them wander around in the wilderness for 40 years. God tested them so they would see the unbelief that was in their hearts. God let them be hungry, and then God fed them

Himself with bread from heaven — manna.

Then Moses said the as God’s people we do not live by bread alone but we live by every word that comes out of God’s mouth. As believers we are more than just human earthly people with a body to feed. We are spirits with a body. Our spirits are more important than our body. It is more important to feed our spirits by obeying than to feed our body.

Some would call this temptation as the “lust (great desire) of the flesh”. In other words,

We are tempted to satisfy things our bodies want. In this temptation, it was food. But the lust of the flesh could be other things—-sex, things money buys, etc.

Satan had said to Jesus, “If you are the Son of God” do this. In other words, Satan wanted Jesus to show off his power to prove to Satan that he was the Son of God.

Jesus did not need to prove anything to Satan. Jesus knew who he was. Satan knew who he was. Jesus was hungry. Jesus could have made bread from stones. Jesus could have made bread from nothing.

Jesus came to earth as a man to live as a man. Jesus did not live using his power like a “magic” thing to make things happen to make life easy.

Jesus was here to live as a man lived. He was hungry. But he knew that after the 40 days were over he would go back into town and eat like any other person. Jesus was not going to go along with the devil’s idea of making bread to satisfy his hunger just to show his power. Jesus was not going to give in to the “moment” to satisfy his hunger.

Jesus was not here on earth to show off his power. If Satan wanted him to turn stones into bread it would not be a good idea for that reason alone. Satan does not tempt us to do things for our own good. He tempts us to do things that he knows will go against God.

When Eve ate from the tree that God said NO. She did it because she believe Satan that when she ate she would see and understand things as God did. In her heart was a desire to do what she wanted. And what she wanted was more important than what God wanted.

Jesus was here to do God’s will. Jesus’ desire was to perfectly do God’s will and please his Father. To Jesus it was more important to do God’s will than eat.

Changing stones into bread to satisfy his own hunger or to show off his power

was not God’s purpose for Jesus. Jesus understood this and Jesus wanted to obey and please God.

1002. Vs.6 What did Satan want Jesus to do? _________________________________

1003. Vs 7 What did Jesus answer? ________________________________________

Jesus quoted Deut. 6:16 We are not to tempt God meaning do not on purpose put yourself in a place of danger and then expect God to save you. Do not on purpose do something stupid then expect God to fix it for you. God gave us a brain and reason we are to use our good sense. There are times that we get into danger or bad situations not on purpose and God in his mercy and helps us.

But we should not expect God to save us when we on purpose go into danger and do something foolish. That is tempting God to let us get what we deserve.

So with Jesus why would he jump or fall on purpose from a high building falling to the ground just to see if God would save him? That was a foolish thing.

Again, Satan is trying to get Jesus to “show off” by jumping from a high building and landing like a bird and not get hurt.

Jesus could have done it. But it would serve no purpose except to show off to people watching that he had power to do things. Jesus did miracles for others to heal and save and feed. For the purpose to help those people believe in that he was God’s son. But just “showing off” was not God’s plan.

1004. Vs.8 Where did Jesus go next? _____________________________________

1005. Vs.9 What did Jesus answer? _______________________________________

____________________________________________________________________

Jesus quotes Deut. 6:13 and 10: 20. God is the only One we are to worship and serve.

Satan is called the Prince of this World. Satan has been given power over some things that happen on earth. Some day this power will end and he will be put into the lake of fire. But for now, he has power in things on this earth. So it is likely that Satan could have made Jesus become a great leader and a king. But even if Satan could do that being a king on earth would not last very long.

Kings change all the time and someone else becomes king. Plus Satan is a liar. He does not tell the truth and you could not trust him to keep his promise.

Jesus understood this. Jesus did not need Satan to make him a king on earth. Jesus will be King over all the earth someday forever. He did not need Satan’s help to be an earthly king for now.

Jesus was on earth to die. The Jewish people thought Jesus had come to be an earthly king. They were looking for a Messiah to save them from the Romans and to give the land back to them, the Jews. But that was not why Jesus came the first time.

Jesus would not worship any one except his Father God.

All of these answers that Jesus gave Satan are things we need to remember. Satan will tempt us, too. We need to know the Word of God so we can speak back to Satan God’s word.

When Satan temps us the Holy Spirit will help us remember what God’s word say

We have to choose if we will obey God’s word or if we will follow Satan’s temptations.

Some would call this temptation “the pride of life”. Meaning we all want respect and people to admire us and think us important. We like to be important and most people like to have power over others.

1006. Vs. 11 The _________________________ leaves Jesus, and _____________________ come and minister to Jesus. (They comfort him and give him strength.)
