Gospel of John Made Easy
Chapter 16
Vs. 1 Jesus is talking: “These things have I told you so you will not be having hurt feelings, they will put you out of the synagogues (Jewish church).
Vs. 2 Yes, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think he is serving God by killing you.
(In the book of Acts we read about Saul, later his name was changed to Paul.
He went from town to town and put Christians in jail. Acts 8: 3
Stephen was stoned to death because he preached about Jesus. Acts Chp. 6 and 7
Church history tells us that every one of the disciples except John was killed for believing in Jesus and preaching about him.)
Vs. 3 They will do these things because they have not known the Father, nor have they known Me.
I am telling you these things so that when they happen you will remember that I told you about it.
I did not tell you these things before now, because I was here with you, but now I am going away to Him who sent me. None of you have asked: “Where are you going?”
Vs. 6 But because I have said these things to you, you feel very sorry in your heart.
Vs. 7 I tell you the truth. It is better for you that I go away, because if I do not go away the Comforter (Holy Spirit) will not come. But if I go away, I will send him unto you.
(Jesus was limited to a man’s body. He could only be in one place at one time.
The Holy Spirit would be able to be with everyone everywhere at the same time.
This would be better for them, because they all would be able to have the Holy Spirit of God in them helping them all the time everywhere. Jesus could not do that within the limits of a human body.)
Vs. 8 And when he (Holy Spirit) is come, he will show the world their sin, he will show them God’s righteousness, he will show them God’s judgment.
Vs.9 He will show their sin because they do not believe on me.
(Not believing that Jesus is God’s Son sent by the Father is their sin. Revelation 21:8 has a list of those who will be in hell “unbelievers” is one of them.)
Vs. 10 The Holy Spirit will show people on earth God’s righteousness because Jesus will be gone back into heaven and will not be here to tell people. So the Holy Spirit will do that.
Vs. 11 The Holy Spirit will show people the judgment of God the “prince” of this world “Satan” has already been judged. Satan’s power over people was broken when Jesus died and rose again.
Because of Jesus’ death we do not have to let Satan have power over us. Satan has power over people who let him have the power, but Jesus can break that power.
Satan will be put into the Lake of Fire forever in the future when Jesus comes again.
Vs. 12 Jesus said: I have many things to tell you but you can not bear to hear all of it now.
Vs. 13 But when the Spirit of Truth comes (The Holy Spirit) He will guide you into all truth. He will not speak of himself, but whatever the Father tells him to speak
that is what he will tell you. He will show you the things that are to come in the future.
Vs. 14 The Holy Spirit will glorify me. He will receive from me and he will pass it on to you. All things that the Father has are mine; I will take of it and show it to you.
Vs. 15 In a little while, then you will not see me; then in a little while you will see me, because I go to my Father.
Vs. 17-19 The disciples were thinking about these words they were not sure what it meant.
Vs. 20 Jesus said, You will be sad but the world will be glad (to see me go).
Vs. 21 Jesus gives the example of a woman having a baby. There is much pain, but in the end there is joy for the new baby.
Vs. 22 Jesus said , “You are sorry for now but I will see you again then you will be happy. Then no one will be able to take your joy from you.
Vs. 23, 24 When that day comes You will not ask me for anything. Whatever you ask of the Father in my name he will give it to you. Until now you have not asked anything in my name. Ask, and you will receive, so you joy will be full.
Vs. 25 These things have I told you using “proverbs” sayings, stories, picture words—
But the time will come when I will talk to you plainly.
Vs. 26 ,27 And at that time, you will ask in my name. I will not pray to the Father for you, but you will speak to the Father yourself and ask in my name because the Father himself loves you because you love me and have believed I came from God.
Vs. 28 I came from the Father, I came to the world, I will leave the world and I will go back to the Father.
Vs. 29, 30 The disciples said Now, we understand what you are saying. You know all things. No one needs to ask you questions. We believe you came from God.
Vs. 31 Jesus said, Do you really believe?
Vs. 32 Jesus said, The time is coming and it is now here that you all will be scattered. You will all go your own way and you will leave me alone. Yet I will not be all alone, because the Father is with me.
(Jesus is seeing the future here. He knows that all of the disciples will leave him when the soldiers come to get him in the Garden and he is taken before the leaders to be crucified. Peter and John do follow far behind to watch but the others all leave.)
Vs. 33 Jesus said, I told you all these things so you can have peace. In the world you will have trouble, be encouraged I have won over the world.
