Book of Job

The name Job is the name of a man. In English we say “job” to mean “work”. To say the name of this man, you say it more like the name “Joe” then add a “b” to it.

This book is hard to read and understand. Job is a man who loves God and has obeyed God in every way. Yet one day awful things began to happen to him.

In those days, people believed that God blessed those who did right, and if you had bad things happen to you it was because you did something wrong or against God so God is punishing you.

We have people today who think that if bad things happen to you God must be punishing you.

Job could not understand why all these terrible things happened to him when he did everything right.

Three of his friends come and give long talks about how Job must have done something wrong for these things to happen to him.

Job would not admit to wrong doing. He had not done wrong. Yet he could not explain why these bad things happened to him.

The person who wrote the story of Job understood why Job had bad things happen.

How did this person know? God must have shown him somehow so he understood what happened in heaven before.

In the first chapter we see how Satan came with other angel beings before God.

Satan was thrown out of heaven. But it seems he was allowed to come before God sometimes or maybe God called him to come before him.
