II Kings 8

818. Remember when Elisha brought a boy back to life? Elisha stayed at a woman’s house. She had made a special room for him. One day her son became sick and died.

Elisha prayed and God made the boy live again.

Elisha now tells that woman to take her son (and husband, if he is still living, we do not know) and go to a place far away from her home. Because—-all around where she lives is going to have a famine (no food) for awhile. Probably, it will not rain and the food will not grow. God must have told Elisha. So Elisha is warning the woman to go live somewhere else for awhile.

So the woman went away. She lived in another country for __________ (how many?) years. Vs. II Kings 8:2

819. When she returned to her house—-someone else was living on her land. So she went to the king to ask for her land back.

As she is going to see the king—–Elisha’s servant Gehazi is talking to the king. He is telling him about the many wonderful things that Elisha has done over the years. He is telling the king about the time that Elisha prayed for a dead boy and God made him live again. Just at that same time, the woman comes in to see the king.

Gehazi tells the king, “Here is the woman I was talking about.”

The woman asks for her land back.

What does the king do for her? _____________________________________________________________________________________________________

820. Do you think the king would have been as kind if the woman had come in by herself and the king had not heard the story about her? _______________

821. Do you think God helped her by having her come in to the king at just the right time? ___________________

Can you think of a time that God helped you by having you be in a place at just the right time? ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

God does guide our steps!

822. The next few chapters tell about the kings of Israel and Judah. Some obeyed God. Some did not. Often the kings were in fights, wars with each other.

Chp. 13: 14 Elisha becomes sick and _______________________.

Elisha prayed for so many and they were healed, even made alive again, but now Elisha is sick and dies. We learn from this that God decides how long we will live.

It was time for Elisha to die and go to heaven.

Sometimes we pray for people and they are not healed they die. But God knows how long he has planned for each person to live. Our days are numbered. Job 14:5

“See his days are decided, the number of his months you have decided, you have set his boundary that he cannot pass.”

823. II Kings 13: 20-21 Here is a surprising thing!

Elisha was buried in a cave. Later, a traveling group of people from a nearby country was traveling through. One of their men died. They put his body in a nearby cave. It was the cave where Elisha was buried. When the dead man’s body touched the dead body of Elisha what happened? _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Wow!

The next several chapters tell about the kings—the good and bad things they did.

These things are important, but I will not ask questions about these things.

We see the sins that the kings and people did. One of the bad things was they were worshipping idols. If they continue to refuse God He will give them up to let their idols “take care” of them. Of course, their idols can not take care of them, so they will have many troubles. But God will leave them to their sin. When people sin all kinds of bad things happen. People who do not respect God’s law steal, murder, fight, hurt people, cheat, lie, do adultery, etc.

In the end, another nation will come in and win in war and then they will take over the land and people.

824. II Kings Chp 20

Hezekiah is the king. He has obeyed God. Now he is very sick. Isaiah is the prophet/preacher now. Isaiah comes to the king to tell him that he needs to get his house in order and make sure his heart is right with God because he is going to die.

Isaiah leaves the king to go home.

Hezekiah is very upset. He begins to pray that God will let him live.

God speaks to Isaiah and tells him that he will answer Hezekiah’s prayer and will give him __________(how many?) more years of life.

Isaiah goes back in to see the king. He tells him that he will live for awhile longer. The king wants to know how he will know for sure that God will do this.

Isaiah says that God will give him a sign. The king can choose. The sun will move ahead 10 degrees on the sundial, or the sun will move backward 10 degrees on the sundial.

What did Hezekiah think was harder for the sun to do? _____________________ _____________________________ (Hezekiah would see this happened immediately on the sundial.)

Do you remember the time that Joshua asked the Lord to make the sun stand still?

Joshua 10:13

The rest of the book of the Kings and the next 2 books of the Chronicles are about the different kings and what they did.

Chronicles means the record of things that happened. These books tell if the king obeyed God or did not. They tell of the battles. They tell of things the kings did that were good or bad.

Review: Saul was the first king over the Hebrew people (Jews).

God had chosen David to be the next king.

But one of Saul’s sons tried to be king. Then Saul’s son made much trouble and fighting. Ten tribes went with him the other two tribes decided to go with David.

They chose David to be their king because they knew that God had chosen him and the prophet Samuel had anointed him to be the next king. They separated themselves from Saul’s son.

Finally, Saul’s son made so much trouble than the 10 tribes did not want him ether.

They came to David and asked him to be their king, too.

So David became king over all 12 tribes.

God had promised David that his children, grandchildren on and on would be a king and have the kingdom.

After David, was Solomon.

Solomon started out good and they he did not obey God. God warned him several times, but he still did not obey. So God said that Solomon’s sons would not be the next kings.

One of Solomon’s sons tried to be king but there was trouble. The two tribes of Benjamin and Judah did not want Solomon’s son because he was mean and would bring trouble. So they separated and had their own king.

At first, their king was not of David’s tribe, but then later Josiah was of David’s tribe.

So through many years 10 of the tribes had one king and 2 of the tribes had another king. The 10 tribes were called Israel and the two tribes were called Judah.

Israel’s 10 tribes mostly had evil bad kings. They worshipped idols and did many bad things.

Judah’s two tribes mostly had good kings who worshipped God and did right.

As the years went by, Israel became more evil and God warned them over and over.

Judah also became evil and began ignoring God’s laws and God warned them over and over.

Finally, God let them do what they wanted. They wanted idols, they wanted to sin. So God left them.

When God leaves you trouble is going to come and you have no one to help you.

For Israel and Judah both nearby and far away nations came to fight with them. Finally, the nation of Babylon came and won over them they killed many people they took over the land and they took many of the people back to Babylon to work and be slaves and workers for them.

The land of Israel and Judah was owned by Babylon. Other people moved in.

After 70 years a new king in Babylon let some of the Hebrew people return to their land. They built their temple again. But they were a small weak group of people. Other nations ruled over them most of the time.

In Jesus’ time, the Romans ruled over the land of Israel.

Other groups ruled the land of Israel for hundreds of years.

Finally, in 1948 Israel was given back to the Hebrew/Jewish people to rule the land for themselves.

What happened to God’s promise that David’s family would always rule over Israel?

Right now there is no king in Israel. Their own people are ruling, but not a king.

Some day, Jesus will come to earth again. When he does he will be King over all the earth. Jesus’ mother was from the tribe of Judah David’s tribe. Jesus will be king forever.
