Lesson #51—Parables of Jesus—The Parable of the Widow Who Kept Asking

Parables of Jesus—

The Parable of the Widow Who Kept Asking

By Joyce Webb 2008

A parable is an earthly story with a heavenly meaning.

Jesus told stories so people could understand things about heaven.

The Parable of the Widow Who Kept Asking

Luke 18:1-8

Jesus told this parable:

There was a widow. A widow is a woman whose husband had died.

In the city was a judge. He was a hard man. He did not give much kindness to people. He did not have respect for God.

The woman had a problem. Someone kept bothering her about something. The Bible does not say what.

But she went to the judge for help against this person.

The judge heard her, but did not do anything for her.

The woman kept going back and asking again and again.

Finally, the judge said, “ I am so tired of this woman coming and asking for me to help. I will help her to keep her away from me.”

So the judge helped her.

Jesus said, “If this hard-hearted judge would help this woman who kept coming to him over and over, don’t you think that God will hear his own people who cry to him day and night?

Sometimes we feel that God has not heard our prayer. Sometimes we feel that God ignores us.

God does hear our prayer. God also knows what is best for us.

Sometimes God intends to answer our prayer but the time is not yet.

If our prayer is about someone else for them to do something God has to work with that person’s will. God does not force anyone. So it may take time for that person to come to a different understanding.

God does love us like a good father. He wants what is best for us.

He does hear our prayer.

Keep asking. Keep believing. Keep trusting.

In the end, believe that God will do what is best for you.
