Questions #370 - 388

Numbers 18: 20 through Numbers 20:7

The people have to stay in the desert-wilderness for 40 years. They will move from place to place, but they will not go into the promised land of Canaan.

God has made all those people in other nations to be afraid of the Hebrew people and their God. God had promised he would make them afraid.

The other nations are waiting and watching to see what the Hebrew’s God is going to do. They have heard of the crossing at the Red Sea and the people going across on dry land. They have heard of the things that happened in Egypt. They heard about how God fed his people with bread from heaven.

They are expecting the Hebrew’s God to do something great for his people. They just do not know what it will be.

But nothing happens-----because the Hebrew people will not trust their powerful God to fight for them. The other nations believe that the Hebrew God is great and powerful. Too bad the Hebrew people could not see how afraid they were.

So the Hebrew people begin to wander around in the desert. The other nations do not know that God is punishing his people.

What will happen to the fear that the nations have----if time goes on and on and nothing happens? Will they stop fearing the Hebrew’s God?

This is a lesson for us. When we do not do what God wants us to do. If you feel you should do something, but you will not do it ----because of fear, or some other reason---other people may be waiting for us to obey God, because God is going to work in people’s lives because of you. But you do not obey.

You miss a blessing to be used of God, and they miss a blessing.

Chapter 20

Moses’ sister, Miriam, dies. They are staying in a place where there is not enough water. The people start talking about Moses again---complaining. They get the people together for a big meeting.

This is a hard punishment. We wonder why. We need to remember that God talked "face to face" with Moses. Nowadays God talks to us in our spirits. Our minds and spirits are tied together in this. We feel in our spirits that we should do something, but it is not as clear as it would be if God spoke to us "face to face".

Moses knew clearly what God had told him to do. It was his anger with the people that got in the way and he hit the rock in anger.

We can understand why Moses would be angry. The people were awful to Moses.

But obeying God does not depend on what other people do. Obeying God is between us and God. God does not excuse us because we let our feelings get in the way.
