Questions #315 - 331

By Joyce Webb   2011

Leviticus is a book of laws for the Jewish people. This group of people is called 3 names: Israelites, Hebrews, and Jews.

Numbers has many laws. It also talks about how many people are in each tribe.

In the book of Numbers we have the story of when the Hebrews arrived at the land that God promised to Abraham many, many years before.

The Hebrew people had moved to Egypt because of a famine. They were trying to get food. Joseph was a ruler when they first went there.

Later they were made slaves. Then God brought them out of Egypt. They walked from Egypt to the land that is Israel today.

God took care of them all the way. He did miracles for them so they would learn that God had the power to work for them and take care of them.

Now they are at the land God promised to Abraham. Other people are living there. It has been 430 years and more since the Hebrews have lived in that land. Others have lived there for all that time.

God wants the Hebrews to go in the land and take it for themselves.

The people who are living there now worship idols (gods of stone, gold). They offer their babies to the idols by throwing them in a fire inside the belly of the idol. The babies are burned alive. They have a sexual party when they worship. They do many sinful things. They do not worship the true God.

God has been patient with them. He has watched their sin. They have no interest or desire to worship the true God. God has decided that it is time to stop these people. To stop the killing of babies. To stop the sexual parties.

To stop the worship of idols.

God is going to help the Hebrews in chasing the people out of the land. God had promised them that he would help them take over the land in Exo. 23:27--God said: "I will send My fear before thee. I will destroy all the people to whom you will come to. I will make all your enemies turn their backs unto you. (They will run away.)" Vs. 28 "I will send hornets (bees) before you to drive out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hittite." Vs. 29

"I will not drive them out in one year, because the land would become full of weeds and thorns, and wild animals will move in." Vs. "Little by little, I will drive them out, until your families grow bigger and you have more people, and you can fill the land and take care of it."

In Exo. 23: 31---33 God gives the edges or boundary lines that will be their land. In today’s news on TV, the neighbors of Israel want Israel to give up some of their land---they say that if Israel will give up the land then the neighbors will be peaceful with them. The neighbors of Israel will never be happy with Israel giving up the land. They want Israel gone.

Israel still does not have all the land that God promised. God will see that they get all the land He promised.

God also told the Hebrews ----Do not marry the people in the land. Do not make agreements with them. Do not worship their gods. Do not let them live in the land after you take it because they will influence you to do wrong. Then you will sin, too.

Now in Numbers 13: 2 God tells them to choose men who are leaders to go into the land of Canaan and see what kind of land it is. They are to see who lives there. To see what kind of food grows. They are learn everything they can and they are to come back and tell Moses.

Moses prays to the Lord to not destroy the Hebrew people. He tells the Lord that all the people of the land have heard from the Egyptians how God worked for the Hebrew people. The people all around saw how the cloud by day, and cloud of fire by night led the people. They heard about the other things that God did for the people They are afraid of the Hebrew’s God-----just like God said he would do for them. He said he would make the people afraid.

But the Hebrew people do not want to trust God. They choose to give in to fear. So God can do nothing for them.

God can only help us as we trust him and follow him in faith. If we give in to fear and refuse to choose faith----God can do nothing for us.

God will not push us. He leads us. That means we have to follow. If we refuse to follow because of fear----then you stand still---God can do nothing until you follow in faith.
