275. Exodus 17: 1-7

The people of Israel are traveling through the wilderness (almost desert area of some grasses and few trees). They stop to set up their tents in a place called Rephidim. What do they need?

The people complained that God had left them alone to die in the wilderness. They complained so much and were so angry in spirit that the Bible says that they tempted God. This means they tested God's patience with them. He almost punished them or He almost made something happen that would be a punishment against them.

277. Exo. 17: 8-16 While they were here a man named ________________________________ brought a group of men against them to fight.

In this part of the world, people lived in family groups. They lived in tents and moved around from place to place. These groups wanted to protect the areas of land that they used to feed their animals. These groups often fought against each other. Each group wanting to be the strongest and get new lands.

So the people of Israel came into the area. They are only passing through, but Amalek wants to fight against them. Moses must have told him they were passing through, but Amalek does not want to allow them to go through his land or he does not want their animals eating the grasses, or he just feels nervous about them being there and decides to fight.

In other verses, we read where Moses talked with other leaders of groups, and these leaders let them pass through their lands.

278. Amalek wants to fight. So Moses chooses a man named _________________________to be the leader for the group of fighting men from Israel.

The people of Israel won. God told Moses to write in down so this battle would be remembered.

God also said that He would destroy all of Amalek's people (all family members and relatives).

Later in the book of I Samuel Chp. 15, and in the book of Esther with Haman, a relative of Amalek and Agag. Haman was a far off relative (many years) from Amalek. But God does not forget the promises that He makes.
