Proverbs or Wise Sayings

Be Generous

Proverbs 11:17

Your own soul is nourished (fed) when you are kind,

But you destroy yourself when you are cruel (mean).

Proverbs 11:24

It is possible to give freely and become more wealthy (rich),

But those who are stingy (keep things for themselves) will lose everything.

Proverbs 19:17

If you help the poor, you are lending to the Lord,

And He will repay you.

Proverbs 21:13

Those who shut their ears to the cries of the poor

will be ignored in their own time of need.

Proverbs 3: 27

Do not keep back from giving to those who deserve it when it is within your power to help.

Be Wise

Proverbs 4: 5

Learn to be wise, and develop good judgment.

Proverbs 1:7

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

Proverbs 2:6

For the Lord gives wisdom!

From his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

Proverbs 3:5

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,

Do not depend (rest) on your own understanding,

Look carefully for His will in all you do,

And He will direct (guide) your paths.

Proverbs 2:7

He gives good sense to the godly.

Proverbs 2:9

Then you will understand what is right, just, and fair.

And you will know how to find the right path of action every time.

Proverbs 12:1

To learn, you must love discipline,

It is stupid to hate correction.

Proverbs 12: 15

Fools think they need no advice,

But the wise listen to others.

Proverbs 3:7

Do not be impressed (proud) with your own wisdom.

Proverbs 12:19

Truth will stand the test of time;

Lies are soon found out.

Proverbs 12:16

A fool is quick to get angry,

A wise person stays calm when insulted. (something hurtful is said)

Proverbs 12:18

Some people say hurtful things,

But the wise person's words bring healing.

Proverbs 3:21

Do not lose sight of good planning and insight (seeing beyond the surface of something)

Proverbs 3:35

The wise receive honor,

The fool receives shame.

Proverbs 8:11

Wisdom is more valuable than rubies (red stones for rings).

Proverbs 13:16

Wise people think before they act.

Proverbs 14:15

Simple minded people believe everything they are told!

Wise people think carefully about it.

Proverbs 13: 20

Whoever walks with wise people will become wise,

Whoever walks with fools will come to hurt.

Proverbs 24: 5

A wise man is more powerful than a strong man.

Anger

Proverbs 15: 1

A gentle answer turns away anger,

Hard words stir up anger.

Proverbs 13: 3

Those who control their tongue will have a long life,

A quick angry word can destroy everything.

Proverbs 19:19

Short-tempered people must pay their own penalty (pay for their own mistake),

If you rescue (save) them once, you will have to do it again.

Proverbs 14: 29

Those who control their anger have great understanding,

Those with a quick temper (anger) will make mistakes.

God and Us

Proverbs 15: 16

It is better to have little (things, money) and have fear (respect/love) for the Lord

Than to be rich and live with a troubled mind.

Proverbs 16:3

Commit (give/surrender)) your work to the Lord,

And then your plans will succeed.

Proverbs 3:11, 12

Do not ignore it when the Lord disciplines you,

And do not be discouraged when He corrects you.

For the Lord corrects those He loves,

Just as a father corrects a child whom he loves.

Proverbs 19:3

People make trouble in their own lives, by their foolishness,

and then they are angry at the Lord.

Rewards for the Godly

Proverbs 11:4

Riches will not help on the day of judgment,

But right living is a safe guard against death.

Proverbs 12: 28

The way of the godly leads to life;

Their path does not lead to death.

Proverbs 11:18

Evil people get rich for a short time, but the reward of the godly will last.

Proverbs 14: 34

Godly living lifts up a nation,

But sin brings shame to any people.

Proverbs 16: 7

When the ways of people please the Lord,

He makes even their enemies live at peace with them.

The End of Those Who Ignore God

Proverbs 11:7

When the wicked die, their hopes all perish (die),

For they rely (depend) on their own weak strength.

Proverbs 28: 13

People who cover over their sins will not prosper (succeed),

But if they confess and forsake their sins, they will receive mercy.

Proverbs 24; 19

Do not be upset because of people who do evil; do not be jealous of the wicked.

For the evil doers have no future, their light will be taken out.

God is Over All

Proverbs 16:9

We can make our plans,

But the Lord determines (decides) our steps.

Proverbs 25:2

It is God's right and decision to hide a thing (keep things a secret).

Proverbs 20: 24

How can we understand the road we travel? It is the Lord who directs our steps.

Watch Your Spirit

Proverbs 16:32

It is better to be patient than powerful;

It is better to have self-control than to conquer (take over) a city.

(In other words, It is better to control yourself than to control a city.)

Proverbs 17:22

A cheerful heart is good medicine.

A broken spirit makes a person weak.

Proverbs 12: 25

Worry weighs a person down;

An encouraging word cheers up a person.

Proverbs 18:12

A proud spirit goes before a fall,

A humble spirit goes before honor.

Proverbs 4:28

Guard your heart, for it affects (influences) everything you do.

Proverbs 29: 25

Fearing people is a dangerous trap.

But to trust the Lord means safety.

Proverbs 20: 22

Do not say, "I will get even for this wrong." Wait for the Lord to handle (take care of) the matter.

Proverbs 14:30

A relaxed attitude lengthens (makes longer) life.

Children and Parents

Proverbs 29: 15

To discipline and tell a child that he is wrong will bring wisdom in the child,

But a mother is shamed by a child who is not disciplined.

Proverbs 19: 18

Discipline your children, while there is hope. If you do not, you will ruin their lives.

Proverbs 22: 6

Teach your children to choose the right path,

And when they are older they will stay on it.

Proverbs 22:15

A young person's heart is full of foolishness,

But discipline will drive foolishness away.

Proverbs 23: 13

Do not fail to correct your children. They will not die if you spank them. Physical discipline may save them from death.

Proverbs 13: 24

If you will not discipline your children, it shows you do not love them:

If you love your children, you will be quick to discipline them.

Proverbs 17: 21

It is painful to be the parent of a fool;

There is no joy for the father of a rebel.

Proverbs 17:25

A foolish child brings grief (sorrow) to a father

And bitterness to a mother.

Proverbs 28:7

Young people who obey the law are wise;

Those who look for worthless friends bring shame to their families.

Proverbs 17:16

It makes no sense to pay money to educate a fool,

Because he has no heart for wisdom (learning).

Words We Say

Proverbs 16:24

Kind words are like honey---sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.

Proverbs 18:4

A person's words can be like life-giving water.

Proverbs 12: 22

The Lord hates those who do not keep their word,

But He is happy with people who do.

Proverbs 21: 23

If you keep your mouth shut, you will stay out of trouble.

Proverbs 17: 27

A truly wise person uses few words;

A person with understanding is even-tempered.

Proverbs 17: 28

Even fools are thought to be wise when they keep silent;

When they keep their mouths shut, they seem intelligent (smart).

Proverbs 11:12

It is foolish to say mean things that makes your neighbor look bad,

A person with good sense keeps quiet.

Proverbs 11:13

Gossip goes around telling secrets,

But those who are trustworthy can keep a secret.

Proverbs 15: 23

Everyone enjoys a fitting reply, it is wonderful to say the right thing at the right time!

Proverbs 27: 2

Do not praise yourself

Let others praise you.

Proverbs 26: 22

Rumors (story that may not be true) may be interesting to hear---but they go deep into the heart to hurt to one is talked about.

Proverbs 26: 20

Fire goes out when there is no more fuel,

Fighting and quarrels stop when gossip stops.

Wives and Words

Proverbs 19: 13

A nagging wife annoys (upsets the peace) like a continual (on going) drip--drip--drip of water.

Proverbs 21: 9

It is better to live alone in the corner of an attic

than with a contentious (arguing, nagging, mean-tongue) wife in a lovely home.

Proverbs 21:19

It is better to live alone in the desert than with a crabby, complaining wife.

Friendship

Proverbs 17:9

Overlooking another person's weaknesses and faults keeps love in the relationship,

Telling about their weaknesses and faults to others will separate close friends.

Proverbs 25:17

Do not visit your neighbors too often or they will get tired of you.

Proverbs 18: 19

It is harder to make things right with a friend you have hurt,

Than to take over a walled city.

Proverbs 15: 17

A bowl of soup with someone you love is better than a steak with someone you hate.

Drinking

Proverbs 20:1

Wine makes mockers, liquor leads to fights.

Whoever is led astray by drink can not be wise.

Proverbs 23: 31-35

Do not let the sparkle and smooth taste of wine fool you.

For in the end it bites you like a poisonous snake.

You will stagger like a sailor at sea, holding onto the mast.

And you will say, "They hit me and I did not feel it.

I did not know it when they beat me up. When will I wake up so I can drink so more?"

Sex with the Wrong Woman

Proverbs 5: 3 - 14

The lips of a woman who is immoral or adulterous speak words sweet as honey.

......in the end it will be as bitter as poison. Run from her! Do not go near the door of her house. If you do , you will lose your honor and give up everything you have gained in life to people who will have no mercy on you!

Later you will be in pain and sorrow for disease will destroy your body.

You will say--How I did not want to have discipline! If only I had not been determined to have things my way! Why did I not listen to those who wanted to teach me? Why did I not give attention to those who wanted to give me instruction and warning?

I have come to ruin (been destroyed), now I must face public dishonor!

Proverbs 5: 15, 16

"Drink from your own well." ---meaning-----Share love with your wife only! Why give your seed ("sons", sperm) to the public by having sex with anyone?

Proverbs 5: 18, 19

Let your wife be a fountain of blessing for you. Be happy in the wife you married when you were young. Let her breasts satisfy you always. May you always be captured by her love.

Do Not Be Lazy

Proverbs 12:11

Hard work means prosperity (profit);

Only fools idle (waste) away their time.

Proverbs 10: 4

Lazy people are soon poor; hard workers get rich.

Proverbs 14: 23

Work brings profit,

But just talk leads to being poor.

Be Wise with Your Money

Proverbs 6: 1 - 5

If you co-sign a loan for a friend or promise to back up a debt of someone you do not know well----if you have put yourself in a trap by this kind of agreement----quick, try to get out of it if you can!

You have put yourself at your friend's mercy. Swallow your pride, go and beg to have your name removed. Do not put it off. Do not rest until you do. You are like a deer trying to get away from a hunter or a bird flying from a net.

Proverbs 17:18

It is poor judgment to co-sign a friend's note, to become responsible for a neighbor's debt

Proverbs 14:4

An empty stable stays clean,

But no money comes from an empty stable.

(This idea can mean more than about money. Wives and mothers sometimes get upset with mess and dirt made by the family. If there were no family the house would be clean, but is that what we would really want?

This idea can be true for other things, too.)

Proverbs 28:6

It is better to be poor and honest

Than to be rich and crooked (dishonest).

Miscellaneous

Proverbs 11: 1

The Lord hates cheating, but he is happy with honesty.

Proverbs 6: 16 There are 7 things the Lord hates:

Haughty (proud) eyes

A Lying tongue

Hands that kill the innocent

A heart that plans evil

Feet that run to do wrong

A false witness who tells lies

A person who says things that stirs up anger among people so they are unhappy with each other

Proverbs 20:25

It is dangerous to make a promise to God without thinking about it carefully and counting the cost.

Proverbs 11:22

A woman who is beautiful but does not have good judgment is like a gold ring in a pig's nose.

Proverbs 12:10

The godly take good care of their animals.

Proverbs 13: 12

Hope when it is put off over and over makes the heart sick,

But when dreams come true there is life and joy.

Proverbs 14: 10

Each heart knows its own bitterness,

And no one can fully share its joy.

(No one except that person can truly know how deep is his own sorrow or joy.)

Proverbs 14:12

There is a path that seems right,

But it ends in death.

(People can tell themselves that what they are doing is okay, or they can tell themselves what they believe is true----but they are wrong. Only God’s way is true. If they have chosen another way----it may seem right----but it is not.)

Proverbs 15: 3

The Lord is watching everywhere, keeping His eye on both the evil and the good.

Proverbs 15: 8

The Lord hates the sacrifice of the wicked,

But he is happy in the prayers of the upright.

(Sometimes we hear of famous people who live bad lives----give a big gift of money to a church----God says he does not want their money---He wants their heart and obedience.)

Proverbs 21: 3

The Lord is more pleased when we do what is just and right than when we give him sacrifices.

Proverbs 16: 2

People may be pure and right in their own eyes,

But the Lord looks at their heart and what they were thinking.

Proverbs 23:9

Do not waste your breath trying to advice a fool,

They will hate the advice.

Proverbs 24:10

If you fail under pressure

Your strength is not very great.

Proverbs 25:14

A person who does not give what he has promised is like a cloud and wind that does not bring rain.

Proverbs 25: 19

Putting your trust in someone who can not be trusted is like trying to chew with a bad tooth or walk on a broken foot.

Proverbs 28:2

Where there is moral sin and decay within a nation, its government falls easily.
