Gideon had the men cover their lamps with a pitcher. In the dark, the soldiers made a circle around the Midianite camp. There were only 300 of them so they were spread out in a circle. They were quiet and kept their lamps hidden. Then at Gideon’s signal, they took the pitchers off of the lamps (torches) threw them on the ground to break them, and they held up their swords and yelled, "The sword of the Lord and of Gideon."
The men in the Midianite camp were asleep. They woke up with the noise. They saw the lights all around them. They did not know that it was only one single line of men. They thought there were hundreds of men out there in the dark.
They got up afraid. It was dark. They saw men come near them. They thought it was the enemy in the camp. But it was their own men. They grabbed their swords and started swinging. But they were killing their own men. They were in confusion and fear.
Some of them began to run away from the camp. The soldiers of Israel chased after them.
They were killed. God gave them a great victory with only 300 men!
