Judges 6: 1 - 31

The book of Judges tell about the men who led the people of Israel after Joshua died. Each one was called by God to lead the people for a time. Many of them led the men of Israel in battle against the other towns around them.

The people in this area and in these times were small groups or tribes. They had chiefs or kings over them. Some groups were big and some were small. They often would fight over land.

God had promised the land to Abraham and to his children after him. Then for a time of 400 years God took Abraham’s people into Egypt. Then He led them out of Egypt back to Canaan. During this 400 year time, God was watching how the people were living in that land. The Canaanite people worshipped idols and did all kinds of evil things. They did not turn to the true living God.

God had said that when the time for his patience with them was done, he would let the people of Israel come in a take over the land.

God told Israel that they needed to stay true to obeying God if they wanted to continue to live in the land. If they started worshipping idols and doing evil things like the people of Canaan were, God would let some other country come in and take over the land from Israel.

In the book of Joshua, we saw some of the first battles that happened when the people first started taking over Canaan. Now, in the book of Judges, we will see some more of the battles and other happenings with the leaders.

The leaders were called "judges" because that is what they did for the people. They listened to problems and arguments that the people had and they made a decision like a judge would.

All of the judges were men, except one. Her name was Deborah.

Judges Chp. 6

The Midianites have been bothering Israel for some time. They would steal anything they could. They would steal their animals. They would steal their grain when it was harvested.

The people of Israel had been praying to God to save them and help them.

God decided it was time to answer and help them. He came to a man named Gideon. Judges 6:11-40
